Iv seen so much footage of ali in training but one thing i cant recall seeing is him doing pad work at anytime, has anyone got any links to footage of him doing any? Was dundee big on his fighters doing the mitts? Its such a big part of modern days fighters training but was it in the 50s to the 70s?
Well Ali did sparring, roadwork and skiprope. The only thing that was even slightly odd about him was that he did less floorwork than was held to be crucial at the time (and still is by many).
Interesting...crazy how much the times have changed in terms of training yet theres still people who say these older generation fighters are all better
Im not saying i agree with the people who say that the new way is the best way just that its open for debate. Ray robinson is one fighter thou who even in 40 years time whoevers the best in the world around that weight would still not probley last with ray in his prime in my opinion. Not just once in a generation type of fighter once ever type of fighter!!
great point, i hate doing padwork too, when you're in a fight no one says "hey buddy, hit me with a one two real quick"
You could say modern sports science is the reason no one can take a punch now because people are punching harder and faster than in the past. But i don't agree that people are more chinny now. Its obvious boxer are better athletes now with the advances in training its only natural; every other sport has advanced so why not boxing ?
I read an article in ring magazine interviewing Manny Steward on why there aren't as many devastating punchers around these days compared to older generations. He blamed padwork to an extent, saying you have to train to punch thru the pad not just make contact like floyd mayweather and uncle roger. People see that and they think it looks cool so they dont train properly. He also said fighters baby their hands way to much these days. compared to the old fashion thin leather mitten like bag gloves. Also the amateur system makes fighters just concentrate on points rather than sitting down on your punches with the computer scoring.
Every single other sport athletes have got bigger, strong, faster, better stamina, new word records are being set each year. But for some reason you think boxing hasn't moved on ? How can guys from back in the 50's who drank, smoked and ate **** be better athletes ? The only reason they was able to get away with it back then is because everyone was doing it. Physically today boxers are better athletes There no possible way i can prove what im saying its just common sense.
