Ali & Floyd: Arrogant and Funny vs Arrogant and Abrasive

There are some accusations of racism regarding the dislike of Floyd Mayweather by some boxing fans. I'd like to make some points to debate whether its racism or not.

Lets take Muhammad ALi. Both are black but Ali is universally admired and praised as a man and a boxer, while Floyd is universally admired mostly as a boxer only. Both like to inflame the crowd but Ali's style of flaming was mostly directed at his opponent and was funny in most cases because it was so over the top, except to his opponent.

Floyd's taunts tend to be abrasive and tries to evoke sympathy for himself as being discriminated by HBO and whoever else, which touches a chord in anyone who has being discriminated. Its not funny, and it tends to create divisions between people who claim somewhat rightly that he has made millions from HBO, that Manny Pacquaio is also a minority and is incredibly popular, and therefore should shut up about the discrimination.

The other side claim perhaps rightly, that Floyd's theme about discrimination highlights the subtle and not so subtle discrimination felt by minorities which is hard to see because it is so institutionalized. It is a very difficult issue, not as black and white as the VIetnam war.

Point is, Muhammad Ali is black, talked a lot of **** albeit funny ****, has fought and beat the best, and was on the right side of a very divisive social issue. Floyd is black, talked a lot of ****, has fought and beat some of the best and is on the unpopular side of a very divisive social issue.

Nothing but it... Ali was admired by certain parts of the black community.. That is all. Nobody gives a **** if you love them after its all said and done. Thats fake ass love. ****ing people man I tell. "But Ali was articulate" Yeah they still hated his ass even more than Floyd. Actually twice as much hate.

Ali was despised for the longest time. Fraizer still dislikes him for all the **** Ali talked about Fraizer. Everyone got on Floyd's case for calling Steward an Uncle Tom, but guess who called Fraizer an Uncle Tom and a gorilla? Ali said racist **** all the time and built up a following by creating a racial divide. His refusal to go to Vietnam gained him some hippy, liberal white fans. What the hell would you guys be saying if Floyd joined the Nation of Islam and made some of the racially charged comments that Ali made?

Ali was universally admired way before he retired. Of course he was also hated, but I would argue that he had earned the admiration world-wide after his stance on the Vietnam war, and after he beat Frazier and Foreman.

You are aware that the social environment back then was completely different to what it is now?

The "racist ****" that Ali came out with, was in my opinion justified. Black people were treated as animals back then.

Was he justified in calling Frazier a gorilla and an Uncle Tom? I've got no problem with Ali. He did what he had to do. However, how the hell is Floyd abrasive while Ali is funny? I think both are funny, but Ali was much more abrasive than Floyd.

What makes this debate trickier than it needs to be is that America has changed drastically since the 60s and 70s. Racism is still alive and well, but it comes in so many shades of grey that very few people can clearly articulate from the black perspective how it is perceived. And there are more white people who are less interested in admitting that it still exists. The tide was in on white guilt during Ali's reign, and acknowledging him as a great man undoubtedly made some people feel better about themselves and their country at the time. This was a part of the times.

But the simple truth is that setting this aside, Ali was simply a greater man than Floyd. Spin it how you want, he gave up years of his prime to make a political statement. He gave us the greatest trilogy in heavyweight history, and he was genuinely loved by millions of people across every continent. He was an icon.

Floyd doesn't have the presence or the intelligence to be any of these things, and he makes that clear almost every time he opens his mouth. He's a great fighter and nothing more.

Some of Ali's poems were funny but he also said some disgraceful things like calling Frazier a gorilla and an Uncle tom after Frasier had helped him out during the three years he was away from boxing, thats why Frasier still holds a grudge against Ali to this day.
