Ali was still pretty goddamn fast and he was more experienced than in 1964. Liston would probably be a tad quicker and have better stamina than he had in 1964. I don't think Ali would make Liston look as foolish as he did at times in their actual fight, but he just had too much variety for Liston. If one trick didn't work he'd pull up a new one. UD or a late stoppage.

its the same fight as first time around. ali was more relaxed and fought less like he was looking to prove himself, he was basicly a kid and bursting at the seams trying to impress in 64. Ali was much more seasoned if not as fast. I belive all versions of ali would at worse still get inside listons head and take enough away from listons a-game to get him to quit or under perform to the point of losing.
basicly it was being hard to hit that beat liston and ali was still hard to hit by frazierII. Maybe ali gets hit a bit more but he could take it. but maybe Liston gets hit harder? We all no liston did not like getting hit when he got tired.

Something new which ought to be taken into account is that Muhammad was able to sustain a higher punch rate as he lost the legs of his youth. Sonny would be getting hit more than he was in 1964, especially if taking on the Ali from the FOTC to Manila. Wepner was beaten down by a copious championship round volume of punches, and Lyle took 46 unanswered shots before the referee stepped in. Liston would have to absorb a lot of punishment from the mature version of Ali if he was to make an honest attempt to win.

thats just how I see it. liston did not get hit that much outside the ali and martin fights. since his offence was his defence and liston also had all the advantages over most the guys he fought 90% of his career was one way trafic.. Alis elusivness neutralised the physical aspect of liston and physicaly ali was a match for him also. Liston would get hit a lot. He loses when he gets hit a lot. there is no record of liston geting hit a lot and still winning.:happy

    Extra question:

What about the 1975 Ali (224½lbs) of the Thrilla vs. 1960 Liston (212½lbs) of Williams II.

ali by stopage no later than 8 rounds. ali would still land too many shots. there is no version of ali that would lose to liston bar the one who was kayoed by kent green at 169lb.
Liston beat wiliams because he could land and wiliams had been KO'd before like all the other guys he KO'd. it was nothing new. big cat was fodder for 170 bob satterfield.
