There is a difference here. Tua didn't want to engage and got popped plenty with that jab and right hand. If he wasn't completely insusceptible to punishment (in a chin as well as cut-sense), he wouldn't have lasted the distance.

There was a lot of clinching and holding/hitting during Dempsey/Gibbons, but that was just the style back then.

If you're suggesting that Dempsey's illegal kidney punches are something special then i would suggest otherwise, because it's simply fouling.

    Really.

So let me get this straight. What Dempsey claims is true? If so, then we can finally get rid of that myth that he took a dive against Flynn, because he always maintained that he got knocked out. What's it gonna be, are you going to be consistent in believing him?

That is exactly what i'm saying. Willard was WAY to inept. He didn't try to hold on, he just stood there taking punch after punch.

Not really, Tunney had the best record of them, and unlike Dempsey, he held wins over Greb, the #2 guy of the era outside of Dempsey and Wills. And he didn't just beat Dempsey, he dominated him, twice, over only 10 round-fights. More than 10 rounds and Dempsey doesn't hear the final bell. Sharkey, again, one of Dempsey's better opponents although on-and-off, was far ahead on the cards as well until he got fouled and knocked out.

As for arguing that Foreman was better than Spinks..... save yourself that embarrassment. :patsch

Bonavena, unlike Firpo, while akward, actually possessed skill and a feeling for how to throw punches, instead of swinging like an 8 year old, and how to maintain balance. Watch him knockdown Chuvalo. A beautiful, short left hook. Firpo could NEVER do that.

He DID have an easy time with Patterson!! Beat him easily the first time and stopped him in 7 rounds the second time around. And won every round against Chuvalo, who has very little in common with Dempsey.

That is the kind of confidence that will always get you into trouble in this game.

If you make bets like that in the modern division you will loose a lot of money.[/quote]
