Muhammad Ali was scheduled to fight Oscar Bonavena in Japan in mid-1967.

I would think, that bout would be more like a George Chuvalo type bout, with Oscar forcing Ali to work more like a 'construction worker'.

A convincing 15-Round Decision, but hard work at that.

 

let me get this straight as i may be gettin mixed up here. Are you saying that 67 Ali was very inexperienced and that you are certain that prime Foreman would Knock him out?

Aside from their misleading and jobbed fight any man who watched each man fight Norton , Frazier and Chuvalo would have predicted d same thing , if he has a functioning brain and working eggs .

 

They did predict it........in 1974. And looked what happened. The widely acknowledged past prime Ali KNOCKED OUT (not stopped ) Foreman. What makes Webbiano, and im gathering by your post, you too, think a prime Ali would do worse? Im still trying to get my head round him being called 'very inexperienced' in 1967 when he was a world champ with 9 defences behind him, 7 of which finished inside the distance:hey

I think George would be my favourite in the fight yes. Im finding it hard to put it into words, but I think the cockiness Ali had in the 60s was just a ticking time bomb for him to get knocked out, Cooper probably would have if it wasn't for the smelling salts. Whereas in the 70s Ali lost the cockiness inside the ring too an extent, and his first loss to Joe was a real kick up the backside which made him improve his mental game realising he wasn't unbeatable.

Edit: I think the best way to describe what I'm saying is his experience in 67 was nowhere near the level it was when fighting George in 74, as well as his ring IQ and his dulled down cockiness where the reasons why he beat George in my eyes. If Ali tried to dance round Foreman I can just picture George cutting of the ring and landing huge bombs, of course Ali has an imaculate chin and there's a strong possibility he weathers the storm and George gasses but I just have a feeling Big George gets to him and eventually KOs him

And if it wasn't clear so far , 1974 Ali did nothing 2 prove that he could ever beat George Foreman . It's virtually as if they never fought . They really never fought in a fight that mattered and d speculators predicting a Foreman win were not wrong .

 

Results do not matter johnmaff. It is all about the theoretic.

r Stevie G and johnmaff36 d same person ? every time i post something about Ali they reply automatically , and rarely on other subjects .

 

Jimmy Young came closest to rightfully upsetting Ali, not because Young was so great--he was an opportunist challenger who would cower at key moments--but because Ali was so lousy that night.

Norton? No. Ali edged him out taking the stand of a champion.
