Ali Hypocrite

Good point. Except Ali committed excesses in a religious context, his concerns being in the realms of idealism, the human condition, serving God, at a time when most youth are only concerned with partying or, at best, looking for their next supper.

 

Ah, yes, but this is where the Ali-worshippers want it both ways.

On one hand, they want the young Ali to be accepted as some sort of wise thinking young man who held rational and well-thought-out beliefs on some political matters.

On the other hand, all the mass of evidence to the contrary is dismissed as the foolishness of youth, and shouldn't be mentioned.

I still can't figure out how Ali called Joe Frazier an Uncle Tom, when the guy had signed a contract with '11' white businessman,,,,,,,

 

Joe Frazier was from the dirt-poor working-class Black underclass, from the cotton fields and the inner city ghetto.
He WAS the oppressed black man fighting he was to the top.
And no one has shown any evidence that he was ever "Tomming" in his life. He was a hard man, and a honest worker, never needed to suck up to, or back down from, whitey.

Along comes Muhammad Ali, a guy from a relatively middle-class background. The kid was famously bought a new BICYCLE when he was 12. His father ran his own small painting business, his ("respectably" light-skinned) mother was favoured as a housekeeper for the big rich white aristocracy of Kentucky. Cassius Clay went to school with a nice new shiny jacket with "Cassius Clay, boxing champion" emblazoned on the back.
Joe Frazier hit a cloth sack stuffed with leaves in a sharecropper patch in S.Carolina, then went to work in a meat-packing plant in Philly for a slave wage.

It makes me sick that some people think Frazier was "more of an Uncle Tom than Ali".

 

Thats not always the case. Some people just happen to be able to have a realistic perception on life.

If you see Ali contradict himself from something he said one year earlier, or change his mind, it's as if he was either: Manipulated, Unsure, Inconsistent. Anything negative.

But when me and you change our minds in life, we call it "growth." One of my worst favorite characteristics of cynics and critics, is that they always refer to growth as "change" or "contradictory".

 

Because Duce, to be a hero in Africa, is the opposite of being an uncle Tom.

'farcial tournament' in 1967/1968.

Why rate him at all, as he didn't want to to enter that thing anyway.

 

So what your saying is that your brain doesn't have the capacity to understand the fact that although his name was Cassius Clay in 1964, you can still call him Muhammad Ali?

1. You cant perceive that of what a 3 year old can.

You don't have to be an American Boxer to be a Hero in Africa.

There are many Hero's in Africa, that we never hear about.
People and Groups that do the hard work, without the 'media attention'.

Idolize is one thing, Hero is another.

How did you work that out ?

All sorts of people in Africa have been idolised, some good, some bad.
Sometimes kings and leaders and men of distinction who have gone out of their way to sell out their fellow Africans, have nevertheless been given the hero-treatment.

I'm not putting Ali in that category at all. I don't think he was a sell-out or an Uncle Tom. But neither was Joe Frazier, at all.
I just think you're wrong to say being worshipped in Africa proves you're not an Uncle Tom. Some of the biggest men in African history willingly sold their people out for dollars.

I think MR. REZ confuses popularity with HERO.

I mean really, Led Zeppelin outdrew Ali 10 to 1, on a bad night.
I could get tickets for an Ali fight any minute of the day, but try getting tickets to a Zeppelin concert, even when they were in town for 4-days.

 

As an Ali fan,I have a well rounded view on his beliefs. Some of them were rather extreme,as Muhammad,himself,has admitted in more recent years.
