larry holmes? lol i think that it is much better for him saying this bull**** because tyson totally destroyed him and he did beat shavers, he said also that prme norton would have beaten tyson, so here you have the credibility of your holmes

More generally, I'm surprised that so many people think that a boxer can accurately compare the punching power of two very hard-hitting men who punched him almost a decade apart.

check out ring magazine from the issue discussing Tillis/Tyson

Tillis says Tyson hit harder than Shavers.

He says something to the effect "he punches harder than Acorn ."(Shavers).

The author of the story quips that when a fighter takes a guys's best, he often raves about his power more than the power of the guy who really hurt him.

This indicates the author really thought Shavers hit harder, but Tillis said otherwise.

Maybe he really thought Shavers hit harder so changed his tune in later interviews.

I clearly remember the details of this article although I haven't seen it in over 25 yrs.

Enough of this. Tillis didn't fight the Shavers that fought Ali. Too difficult to assess punching power (who hit harder) from different years and different fighters/fights.
P.S. I realize you were just quoting a magazine article.

ON the subject of Shavers power compared to FOREMAN's :

    Ron Lyle

At 4:20 of this video, he tells it.

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7nl8rabZMIA

    [yt]7nl8rabZMIA[/yt]

Lyle fought Shavers just 4 months before he fought Foreman.
Lyle's opinion probably has more authority than anyone else's opinion on the subject.

And if you watch the fights, Shavers blasted him down with a single shot. Foreman threw dozens of shots to get him out of there.

Yeah, but he got back up and stopped Ernie

Foreman was able to hurt Lyle with single shots.

Ernie had great one punch power but he was a poor finisher

    see: Lyle, Holmes, Tillis

He did stop Norton and a young Young, though.

I think fighters really like to give more credit to a guy they survived but beat, than a guy who knocked 'em out or beat 'em.

    It's an ego thing.

Lyle fought a very rusty Foreman who just didn't seem to be focused, especially trying to adjust to Clancy, his new trainer.

    That's true.
But Shavers did knock these guys down HARD with single shots out of nowhere.
Foreman was a superior fighter to Shavers but I have no reason to doubt Lyle judging from what I can see on the film.

Thing is, fighters who only sparred with Shavers reckoned him the hardest hitter. As did Leroy Caldwell, if I remember rightly, who sparred with everyone, and was KO'd by both Foreman and Shavers, among others.

Young said Shavers hit harder than Foreman. He beat Foreman and was stopped by Shavers. Why would he lie?
