Ali is over rated as hell. But people will always love him because of his character. I wouldn't put him on my top five heavies of all time. But they guy was a talent for his time.

wlad will never be held in the same regard as ali let alone many of alis opponents. to compare them is ok, its what fans do. But to say ali is over rated is a pretty ridiculous comment!

I believe that I have posted this before Ali is the greatest heavyweight tha i have ever seen. He beat a lot of good fighters and he had the ability to take a punch great quickness and all of that. whether he could have beaten prime Tyson, Holyfield, Lewis, Foreman and Klitschko I donot know. I think that Foreman was a much better fighter the second time than the first time. Someone mentioned Bonavena, Bugner, Norton etc they would be top contenders in this era as well. I do believe that alot of you guys underestimate some of these heavyweights today. Povetkin is young but he will be good. Chambers is a pretty good boxer as well, so was Chris Byrd Brewster has a head like a bowling ball. I am sure there are more out there. Some of these guys do not really seem motivated though. I thought Ibragamof (whatever his name is) that Lycavich guy i was impressed with at first. A lot of these guys had extensive amatuer experience that earlier fighters never had (makes a difference) They all seem to be distracted. Vlad is a better fighter now than previously, jabs better, uses his size and heigth better. He is not slow and moves very well when he has to, hell nobody ever hits him. Peter is questionable but he is aggressive and has a lot of power. He beat james Toney who i think was a very good boxer. Old and out of shape but he went 12 rounds. Could Ali beat these guys? Probably but what would he think standing in front of Frankensteins like Valuev and klitschko? Klitschko now would be a problem, quick cuts off the ring well, cautious, long Jab. Would Ali change his style and fight inside. Would vlad develop an uppercut for the fight? Who knows. Ali was the greatest! let it rest. And see what happens now. Vlad could end up capturing all of the titles beat everyone and retire with no more losses.

While I question whether Ali was the greatest HW, I feel that an
analysis of Ali's weaknesses might clarify this debate.

Ali had problems with smaller HWs because they had decent speed.

Doug Jones, Joe Frazier, Billy Daniels - all heavyweights that were
not very heavy. Ken Norton was muscular, but not monstrous
in weight. Norton was also very athletic.

Large modern day HWs would not necessarily trouble Ali. I think
that Ali would beat Lennox Lewis and Wlad Klitschko.

Ali was very fast in his prime. Was he really the greatest?

Don't know - but he was definitely a tough and talented fighter!!!

You need to look at Ali pre ban. That's the real Ali. He could compete afterwards but he was never the same after his comeback.

Just as fast of reflexes? I don't know about that.

Frazier took a BRUTAL beating from the monster Foreman and never quit....I know of a FEW of todays top heavies who quit under much less severe conditions...As for Ali, you can't watch him and WEPNER and base your opinion on THAT fight..if thats OK to do then we will base both Klitcskoss on the Brewster-Purrity-Sanders fights then.

I am going to be one of the few who comes out and says I understand your point- today's heavies are bigger, stronger, more athletic.

    BUT...

Yesterday's fighters seems better schooled, more determined, and had more fights. It seems that at heavy, they were in much better shape. Can't imagine anyone today outside Povetkin throwing as many punches as Frazier.

I think, also, you may be underrating Ali's power a bit. He had it when he needed it. Foreman put him as the fifth hardest puncher he ever faced. Said he had a way of cathing you coming in...

Along with his power, size (nearly 6'4"), increadible speed of hand and foot, ring intellignce, granite chin, and expieriencce, I would pick Ali to beat anyone these days.

Though again, I get your point, and Wladdy would be great fight.
