If the fight was so even, why did Liston quit on his stool? There is zero precedence in Boxing history where a Champ quit on his stool for an "injury". The only champs who quit were guys like Willard who took a pounding.
I had it like 4-2?? I did give Liston the rounds were Ali was blinded though. I have no issue if they saw it 3-3.
The announcers also have a lot to do with how you view the fight. That British call was very pro-Clay. The Closed Circuit TNT telecast with Joe Louis was more balanced. The Radio call with Howard Cosell was also different. They made it seem like the fight was going to be stopped at any moment in round 5. This clip starts with the closed circuit call between rounds and then picks up the radio call. This content is protected
Agree or disagree with them but by definition cards reflecting judges scores as at the time aren’t revisionism. Judge 1, 3-2-1 (58-56) Liston, Judge 2, 4-1-1 (59-56) Ali and ref Barney Felix, 3-3 (57-57) Even All judges scored rd 5 to Liston of course but only one, Judge 1, gave rd 5, 10-8 to Liston. Personally I might’ve scored 4-2 Ali or at best 4-1-1 Ali (like Judge 2). From my POV Judge 1’s card is a bit out there and guilty of confirmation bias, looking only at Liston and seriously ignoring Ali’s work and maximising the point spread for rd 5. Flawed as it is, maybe it takes a few rds for it to sink into some Judges predisposed minds that a heavily favoured Champ is actually getting whupped by the underdog. from the get go. Even though this fight falls outside of Ali’s substantive prime I still rank it as one of his greatest performances absolute.
Even as moronic as you are, not even you could've forgotten that YOU pinpointed down to the second when Liston nailed Ali with a huge left. Also, you do realize, as per compubox Liston landed more punches on Ali than vice versa? Muhammad Ali: 95/239 Sonny Liston: 103/330 So next time, you want to call someone "blind" it's best to get your own facts straight. You're by far one of the strangest and worst posters on this site and it's a miracle some still take you seriously.
Are you being willfully ignorant or are you just that stupid? Someone can't quit a championship fight if the fight's even? You realize Vitali quit in a fight where he was WINNING right? Jesus Christ.
Of course there is also Duran- Leonard II, more or less an even fight, Leonard ever so slightly ahead when Roberto waved "No Mas" during the round.
Perhaps a thread in his own right, but arguably Ali was prepared to quit after rd 14 but the signalling of Team Frazier beat him to that particular punch. Personally I think Ali would’ve still toed the line but who knows? Perhaps the answer to that question was provided when Ali somehow transcended an even more painful threshold v Holmes.
It was a competitve fight while it lasted, but Liston was desperate and never really had Ali hurt. Don't get me wrong. I think Liston is GROSSLY overrated. He couldn't finish MAchen and repeatedly dodged a young Quarry. He looks way undersized against Ali, and clearly too old.
It's also possible to sustain much more damage than your opponent in a fight that's *scored* as even. If you nick 3 close rounds and take a beating in 3 rounds you lose, the fight is technically even.
