I heard many times that Ali outboxed Liston and was making him look funny so he quit. I watched the fight recently, and had it 4-2 Liston after 6. Anyone scored the same? Also I don't think that Liston lied about the injury, his left was out of game in 6th round.
Ali boxed beautifully in the fight (his finest performance when considering the opponent). Can't remember how I scored it, but obviously Liston won the round where Ali was blind!
I gave Liston rounds 2, 3, 4, 5 (blind round) Ali got 1 and 6. In 1 Liston started with real rage and was missing a lot. From 2 round, Liston paced himself and scored harder blows. In 6 I saw that Sonny's shoulder hurt and he was outboxed by Ali. Official scores were: 58-56 Liston 58-56 Ali and 57-57 draw
The judges had the fight 4-2 for Liston, 4-2 for Ali and 3-3 even at the time it was stopped. I think it was near even but Ali took control in the 6th.
Any news on that substance that blinded Ali? I heard once that that substance came from Ali's corner cutman, not Liston's...
ali won the 3rd round - that's one of the best rounds in heavyweight history - ali was spanking liston all over the ring early and then liston came back well later but ali won that round. he cut liston and gave him a good beating.
Think I had 4-2 Ali. I got the impression Ali was getting stronger tho & Sonny was running out of ideas & perhaps stamina also.
I never really fiqured out why Liston actually quit....he was the Champ. A lot of fighters on ESPN and USA fights have had arm and leg injuries and fought on even though they were taking a beating.
The Liston shoulder injury was legit. I remember believing it wasn't and arguing it wasn't to the point of someone showing me an FBI Report. There's just a myth that Liston was a big bully that quit for no legit reason, yet he fought with a broken jaw against Marshall...
The orthodoxy here is that Ali always beats Liston but Liston was an all time great who was close to the peak of his powers against a still green (IMHO) Clay. In theory he should have had the potential to win with suficient dedication.
against marshall liston believed he could win so kept fighting with the broken jaw. against ali i believe he felt he couldn't win and therefore mentally was beaten and therefore quit.
Did Liston require surgery to repair the shoulder? If the fight was on the level, exactly when did Liston claim to hurt his shoulder?
Of course it was legit. And Ali really flattened him for 45 seconds in the rematch with that fly swatter of a right .. Com'n please ..
