I'm pretty sure it was right after his loss to Ali. There's an interview of him saying he had injured his shoulder, wearing sun glasses to hide the damage to his face (so it had to be pretty recent) as well as pictures of a doctor examining his shoulder. This content is protected
Dundee says in his book that it was something Liston's corner were rubbing onto his shoulder and that he'd heard rumour that Liston injured the shoulder before the fight
Liston had fought a total of 6 rounds in the last 3 years. Kinda like Dempsey vs Tunney I, .....Sonny was stale....and getting old.
Liston was cut and swelled above and below BOTH eyes.......... He was being hammered............. Ali deserved that win........... '64 in Miami was on the level.......... 1965 in Maine was bull****.......... MR.BILL
I had it 3 rounds apiece. Ali didn't dominate Liston by any means. That's why it was one of the biggest shocks in boxing history when Liston suddenly quit.
The overall fight was close, but Liston was busting up after 6 rds........ Plus, Liston looked gased to a degree........... Some dudes would rather sit out on the stool and make an excuse rather than be counted out on their face / back...... Liston packed-it-in...... Cheers.... SR.BILL
That makes sense. Dundee says about that here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6cgz25SHUA8&feature=related interesting comment bellow: "In a Liston book I read, Sonny Liston when to the hospital afterwards and they found out he ripped his upper left bicep. His camp knew beforehand that he had the problem, but they thought it was no big deal beating Ali, 2 or 3 rounds most. If you look closely a round 3 on Liston has to snap his left jab when he throws."
yeah he wasn't use to hitting thin air ali took rounds 1, 3 & 6. 2 & 4 were very even. round 5 liston won, wow ali was blind.
