Ali Musaevich Baloyev vs. Afinni Abiodun, 8 rounds @ cruiserweight

 

In the match directly preceding this one, in the only title fight on the bill, Kazakh super welterweight prospect Nursultan Zhangabayev defeated Arnel Timpanay (a Filipino journeyman whom Manny Pacquiao has often employed for sparring) by UD to capture the WBC ABC title, improving his record to 6-0 (4).

Round 1

Baloyev is bringing the fight to Abiodun, working a 1-2 up top and pattering like heavy rainfall on the high rigid turtle shell, then after pinning the Nigerian's arms in place whipping a left hook either into the unprotected abdomen or around the elbows to nick his cheek. Abiodun is circling away, pawing out jabs at Baloyev's forehead, and loading up on big cannon-ball rights, grunting as he fires and telegraphing so that Baloyev simply has to position his gloves to intercept.

Round 2

Baloyev is putting in some very nice body work, bent at 90 degrees at the waist and drilling the stomach with both hands, then rising up to 45° and ripping the Nigerian's left eye socket with a powerful looping right as he's pulling straight back in retreat after pivoting off the ropes to escape the body attack. Abiodun is continuing to just unroll jabs on the backfoot, and load up on those heavy grunting right hands which Baloyev has well-scouted by now, and occasionally slapping his way off the ropes with a loose flapping left hook.

Round 3

Baloyev is leading with rights up top, driving Abiodun into the ropes. Baloyev is doubling up on powerful left hooks, first on the liver and then wedged into the side of Abiodun's neck, sandwiching his right arm held fixed in place in the high guard. Abiodun is rolling his fists over each other, pumping himself up to let the counters fly as he drifts away from Baloyev, yet unable to pull trigger in time with anything substantial before the Kazakh has ducked his way in behind a stiff jab or heavy body combo.

Round 4

Baloyev is getting a little sloppier now, reaching with harpooning rights from too far out, missing over the clavicle of Abiodun. In the meantime Abiodun is getting a little bolder, dancing on his toes side to side and stepping in at intervals to flurry in the face until smothering him by pressing in. Baloyev is still landing the heavier stuff when he goes to Abiodun's body, although he is wasting too much time and gas on showy headhunting.

I really hope Egorov is next, if not I might have to miss his fight (I have my cousin's 10-year b-day party - which is doubling as my extended family's xmas gathering - to go to in a couple of hours)

Round 5

Baloyev is landing stiff, hurtful body shots from outside but never cutting the ring off well enough to land in plurality. Abiodun is shimmying his way along the ropes, pushing a defensive jab. Drastically reduced work rate from both in this round. Baloyev tries a big decapitating left hook when he gets Abiodun muscled against the ropes but Abiodun is able to duck and rise (bouncing off the ropes to freedom) with his own grazing counter left hook. Kind of a nothing round, in terms of connects either way, outside a couple of good body shots from Baloyev.

Idk how far along they are, how many bouts have been completed yet, but it currently is after 10pm in Moscow, so probably nearing the upper end of the bill.

 

Round 6

Baloyev is struggling to penetrate Abiodun's guard now, having given up on the low frontal attack or lacking the requisite fuel in his tank for bending forward and letting rip. Abiodun blocking most of the jabs and turning away in a timely fashion just as Baloyev is loosing the arrow with the right cross, but Abiodun is caught at least partially on the side of the neck, wincing. Abiodun is able to nullify a lot of the Kazakh's offense and pepper him with light jabs and flurries while dancing around him and keeping off the ropes.
