Hard to believe the dullest fight of the trilogy happened to be the only fight that was contested for the undisputed HW title.
Have to disagree with ya Ken. I know in my scoring I purposely gave Norton the close rounds some had as a draw. Going over each round, some several times, Ali landed allot of lead right hands and stunned Ken several times doing so. I could have gone 8-7 Ali as I had done in my prior viewings but found a round where Ali's stunning Norton several times with that lead right shaded it for him this time on my card.
As I've always maintained, there is a very good case for giving Norton the verdict in the third fight. As close as it was, however,it is my opinion that Ali earned the victory in the second bout. You're just biased towards Norton as you share his name
One of the NYC newspapers said"If Ali won that fight last night..then the Japanese won World War ll..."
Ken did all the chasing in the 15th. The thing is,he was n't landing much on Muhammad. Whereas Ali was connecting with quite a few punches. Not hard ones, but all of them built up points.
Darling dame (and others)..I just reviewed the 15th over and again to try to get a number of punches landed,,,,,this is close; In the first minute Ken only threw - one punch - a missed jab, Ali threw numerous jabs and landed three. In the second minute Ali landed four more jabs of those he threw, Ken had three punches blocked and landed two. Using Arthur Mercante's scoring method of three parts to a round Ali so far is up 2-0. In the third minute Ali landed two to three punches he threw and Ken landed five to six, four hard, not the overwhelming number here some think, and he loses the round on Arthurs method 2-1. Ali punched and landed more (around 7-2) while throwing far more punches to the moving forward and almost non throwing Norton in the first two mintues, then lost the last third but was not obviously hurt nor were the landed numbers here overwhelming either. If you have Kenny winning this round you have to pretend the first two minutes didn't happen.
Anybody ever see all '3' scorecards of this fight. Arthur Mercante did say, he goes by; A) Effective aggression B) Ring generalship C) Cleaner punching Note; He scores the round by 3 one minute sections. This was the 'hot topic' in New York for weeks after the fight. If a fighter outjabs his opponent by 1-punch in the first minute, and by 1 punch in the second minute, then he would win the round, based on Mercante's philosophy. It seemed, that Arthur Mercante was not rewarding the harder punches in this fight. The press went after Mr. Mercante after this fight. Before this fight, he was the 'King Arthur' of scoring. Afterwards,,,,,,,,'Oh Miss Mercy Mercante' The decision in Yankee Stadium was boo'ed.
Strange about mercante though because in FOTC he was slagging off Ali for using that pathetic pitter patter jab of his then grabbing hold of Joe and then shaking his head to the crowd saying he wasnt hurt. Mercante said that cost him 3 rounds and then now against kenny norton. Was this the fight when after the fight Norton went to clay and said "i beat u sucker!"
for me norton won this fight but ali as with other popular fighters down the years sometimes got nod from the judged in close fights
It was labeled,,,,'An Autumn Disgrace in the Stadium' Mickey Mantle on the fight; 'If they gave me that decision, I'd throw it in the 'East River'. "If it was a Home Run, I would give it back.' On Ali's first 8 rounds; 'I've seen Billy Martin have better fights at the Copacabana'.
