In California, sometimes if a fight was Draw after the scheduled rounds, they would fight one more eliminator round.

During the Champions Forever tour, Foreman felt irritable & was telling Ali to his face "You never beat Norton in any of those fights"! Ali shrugged & leaned in and said " Yeah, well maybe that's true. But I sure did whup you George"!

But Muhammad Ali did answer Dick Young, and the New York Media after the fight,
by stating he didn't want to make a career of fighting Ken Norton, but he owed him
one more fight, and would have another go at Ken.

But of course, he took another avenue.

How controversial do you want it? There was a massive stench over this decision at the time. A Boxing News poll saw just 4 reporters with Ali ahead, a further NY (Post?) one at ringside one the first 13 correspondents asked all had Norton ahead, after that he stopped collating the information.

Yes, actually I am. I can't stand any cocksucking hero worship, where it plainly isn't deserved (like this fight, Young fight, Holmes fight, etc). In fact, I'd say over 80% of my posts are in direct debate with 'fanboys'.
Ali just happens to have more of these saddos than most fighters, Duran has many too.

Well maybe he is nowadays but some of the 'New Orleans' fight comments in the past made my toes curl.

 

I never heard any story of Foreman doing that ... I read that at the shoot Frazier was drunk and was starting to get a bit too much in Ali's face after some clowning around and that first Holmes and then Foreman kind of escorted Joe back ..

 

Lyle was winning on the cards,simply because Ali was n't doing anything of note for the first 5 rounds or so. As soon as he upped his game,the writing was on the wall for Ron.

 

I'll always believe that Ali deserved the nod for the second fight. It was extremely close,but Muhammad made certain of things in the last round. Norton was unlucky in the third go.
