What do you all think? Does Dempsey recreate Ali's infamous first loss, perhaps delivering a KO, or does Ali box his way to victory.

Heres my take, while most of us can agree that a prime, active Ali would certainly get at least a UD over the Manassa Mauler, what about the Ali of the Frazier fight? Along with Ali's inactivity going against him, Frazier basically modeled his entire style off of Jack Dempsey and was arguably less complete in some ways, head movements seem more patternlike and therefore more predictable, and his head usually pressed more directly at his opponent, while Dempsey would mix this up with weaving to the side as well, thus making himself harder to hit than the former style. Therefore in my evaluation, Dempsey wins by a late TKO or possibly decision.

I couldn't imagine Dempsey troubling Ali much.

We are talking about the Ali who lost to Frazier, who stylistically was very close to Dempsey with the biggest difference being Dempsey had more punching power.

Prime Dempsey was as tough as hell...some historians still say Dempsey had the best left hook ever...Ali had trouble blocking a left hook...(he never really learned how)...Jack coming in bobbing and weaving...he hardly ever cut...terrific 2 handed puncher...yeah...I can see how 1971 Ali could "pitty pat" his way to an easy decision...ARE YOU KIDDING? I'm taking 1919 Dempsey against Ali...

    Ali stops him.

Jack too reckless, too open, not fast enough. Muhammad let's him shoot his wad for a couple rounds, outmuscles him and counters him silly and then turns on the gas and forces a stoppage mid rounds.

I think that Dempsey would have beaten the Frazier of the FOTC, but I also see his style as being less well suited to fighting Ali

The key to beating Ali is sustained pressure, nit trying to end the fight as quickly as possible.

Having said that, the Dempsey of the Gibbons fight, might give Ali no end of an argument.

He had the style, the left hook, more importantly the head movement.

You need to stump up the pay per view for this one, if it ever happens.

Not a goddamned prayer in the world that Dempsey doesn't get wasted by that Frazier. Jesus Christ Almighty. You take a professional ducker who fought a bunch of pasty nohopers and pit him against a dynamo like PRIME Frazier who had the single greatest victory in the division's history. They wouldn't have enough buckets to pick up the pieces of Jack after that one.

A 184lb left hooking mauler from 1919 beats the 212lb greatest of 52 years later??
Every other sport improves but boxing doesn't !?!?!?
Ali may even take some pleasure out of destroying Dempsey.
As for Dempsey beating the 1971 version of Joe Frazier, that takes some imagining ??

I agree. Dempsey was great for his time and I would rate him the number two all time heavy prior to Joe Louis' era but I cannot see beating a prime Joe Frazier or even a slightly post-prime Muhammad Ali of the early seventies.

My dad loved Joe Louis as they were from the same era and both vets.
He'd claim Louis was the greatest thing to come over from the States during the war.And tougher than Popeye.
But other times he'd say Ali was indeed the greatest.

My dad was the same. He originally said that Joe would beat Muhammad but changed his mind towards the end of his life.

My dad thought Ali was in the right on not going to Viernam.
I couldn't believe it when he said that
