I think both men have claim to this in a sense. Louis most consistently did. He often look plodding, but in most fights, destroyed his opponents with beautiful combinations. A young Ali would often take most rounds to achieve results, and sometimes, be forced to go the distance. But, I believe Ali in his peak performance looks absolutely unbelievable. Against Williams, Patterson I, Terrell, and Liston I, his feet don't look like they touch the ground, his punches don't miss, and the pain he inflicts you feel through the screen. So, I'd say Louis always looked great, and Ali sometimes looked less than great, but had a couple of times where he looked truly invincible, imo. Draw.
Ali´s flashyness and stylishness against Louis´ combination and power punching. Hm, I prefer the latter overall but some of Ali´s performances were simply perfection.
It was really my logic that got to you :yep No, you always vote for the oldest and most black and white fighter
I couldn't agree more. As insightful and concise a post as I've read on this forum. Well done. :thumbsup
Ali is less vulnerable for me, and thats the only major difference. If faced with a devestating puncher, particularly one bigger than them, I'd feel less worried about Ali being caught and stopped. A lot less worried. You can argue either side for who was more efficient in their style, as both were spectacular at what they were trying to do. Louis is the premier puncher in boxing history, perfection of his craft. Ali was a freakish talent who could do things that amazed and that no man his size should ever be able to do. Which is more impressive is up in the air, but for durability - just sheer toughness - its Ali, and that's going to carry the day.
I didn't vote on this poll because they both look great at their best, as good at heavyweight as any fighter ever looked. I tend to think Joe Louis was clearly the better boxer, the better fighter and better puncher. But Ali looked just as phenomenal doing what he did.
