@Prime: David Tua, Ike Ibeabuchi, Vitali Klitschko, David Haye, Chris Byrd...Ali would humiliate them all.
OH Larry,,,,,,,, You're acting like James Dean,, saying he was a better actor than Marlon Brando. You are both great, and judgement should be viewed by others. Let history decide this one.
I don't believe Holmes refers mainly to records, but ability. The primary mistake I think Holmes makes when envisioning himself "tearing up Muhammad" is he never met Ali at his best. He was first taken up to Deer Lake in 1971, after FOTC. First, let's make one thing clear: Ali built arguably the best record in the puncher's-chance division, without ever possessing a devastating punch! If you are looking for slam-bam, you will never see Ali as the best. But, like with fine art, there is way more than meets the eye. First, Ali never merely jumped around the ring. The basis of his movement was proper lateral footwork adopted as the launching pad for offense. Amazing at any weight and almost impossible at heavyweight! He set up out of punching range and could thus hit without being hit. This is so far above any average heavyweight's realm of options, simply because it requires extraordinary ability: a) the athletic harmony required to move 200 pounds gracefully around the ring on a foundation of stamina. b) speed to enter into range and strike in combination c) the timing to land right on the button d) razor-sharp reflexes to avoid a counter. This skill-set alone sets Ali in a class by himself. If this weren't enough, Ali had a superb chin, endurance, survival instincts and was a master general in the ring. Some of history's most powerful dragons pounded on him in vain and were outlasted in grueling, epic contests to the finish. The 3-time champion was devilishly hard to catch flush on the chin, could take nearly unlimited punishment to the body and was a genius in tactical strategy for winning rounds, expertly utilizing flurrying and the clinch, as well as tactical psychology, from the use of nicknames and poetry to histrionically mocking some of the most destructive bombs ever deployed in the ring. Men of every stripe, utilizing every style, were inexorably vanquished by the Greatest. Holmes' ring style and resources were basically founded on Ali's. And he was intelligent enough to marry it to his own strengths. More power to him. As he himself once said, "What's wrong with being like Muhammad Ali?" Absolutely nothing. But, respectfully, "who' s your Daddy?"
compared to frazier he punched like a butterfly ali is the most overrated fighter( not saying hes not one of the greatest) but he is not the goat at heavyweight
"Well i'd just like to say **** you, and uh, **** him, and **** the judges. And since we on HBO ya'll can suck my mother ****ing dick" - Larry Holmes "Hi my name is Larry Holmes. I like soup, and my favourite soup of all is the Campbell's soup. Its a good soup, its a hot soup, its a liquid soup, its a chunky soup" - Larry Holmes "If i hurt your feelings back there...so...****ing...what?" - Larry Holmes Considering he also drop kicked Berbick from the top of a polic car wearing a multi coloured 1980's jumpsuit, Larry Holmes is a legend.
nah man its Eddie Murphy on a Mike Tyson and Larry Holmes comparison [ame]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=w8b7n9U6D3Y[/ame]
YEP,,,,,,,,,,'Trading Places',,,,,,,was along time ago. At least we have Chevy Chase,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,atsch
Chevy Chase,,,,,,,,last good joke was in 1976. Eddie Murphy in 'Trading Places'......."Yes, I'm a special agent,,,,,Special Agent Orange. Classic line. Larry Holmes, my favorite fighter,,,,,,,,,,,,,please, have a Cream Soda and relax. Maybe if he had killed Muhammad Ali in the ring in 1980, he would be content.....
If he had killed Ali, he probably would have been wrecked mentally. When he started really to tee off on people and hurt them he would usually step back and wave in the ref to stop it. Against Ali he was trying to force a stoppage, but not knock him out. Larry will only be content when people mention him, and talk only about him and don't ask him the recycled questions about Ali, Foreman, etc.
