oh.... people act like you gotta get floored to get put on the ground....all it takes is a perfect tap of the chin and itll shift your whole ****... and yo to the guy above... his head def jerks back... not a lot but it jerks
square on the jaw, and Sonny was off-balance. For those who don't think Ali had power you need a history lesson.
Ali had power but even he certainly didn't think this punch had enough on it to do anything like what Liston made out. Ali reacts by shouting at Liston, with disgust and anger, telling him to get up and fight. The way Liston goes down is unconvincing, he scurries across the canvas with his arms out front breaking his fall. Then he rolls around clearly acting. That's enough to tell anyone it's a fake. An obvious fake. And the slow-mo replay just shows a punch landing and Liston's head turns a bit. Even a slap would do that.
It may not have been the best punch but he was going to get up he was just waiting for Ali to go to the neutral corner liek the rules say but he got up without being counted out and fought on. But then a magazine editor of all people stops the fight. Its like Dempsey Tunney Ali had to go back to a neutral corner the ref was right but let himself get convinced other wise.
Sometimes, a light punch can cause dizziness for some time when it hits in the right place, on a nerve. The punch clearly connected, and moved his neck a bit. Of course, he could have overacted the outcome to deliver a stoppage without having to take much damage.
It connects but it isnt a big shot. This video doesnt show it but its the manner in which Liston goes down that makes it look so fake. He doesnt "fall" down he basically crawls down and it looks like a terrible actor faking a fall.
Sonny's acting improved a bit in later roles, but not by much : [ame]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FXSJIxIe_AE[/ame]
It's actually a nice shot. Ali rocks back and to the side to take the steam out of Sonny's left jab, and comes over it with a right hand that catches Liston seemingly on or near the temple as he's leaning forward. There's obviously enough force to cause Liston's head to jerk to the side a bit, so it shouldn't be a surprise when Sonny pitches forward onto his hands, and then to a knee. So the knockdown's legit. From that point forward, it's anyone's guess as to whether Liston was so hurt that he had to drop to his back, or whether he decided that now was as good a time as any to get out because it just wasn't going to get much better for him going forward...Much like what heppened in the first fight.
Exactly. Take a look at Mundine-Ottke or Tszyu-Judah for example; if the punch landed in just the right place for a one punch knockout, he wouldn't have been able to make those movements or would've been stumbling around clearly out of sorts. I don't doubt the punch staggered Liston, but his reactions afterwards scream "dive".
Can someone confirm if thats Larry Merchant in the crowd to the right of Liston just as he's going down. Looks just like him.
