I'll say it again, the biggest clue is in Ali's reaction. If he thought it was his great "phantom punch" why did he stand over Sonny gesturing for him to get up and shout "get up ya bum?" I'm the biggest Ali nuthugger going but Sonny took a dive. It's a no brainer.
And anyone who thinks that tap on the head could lay out a granite jawed tough guy like Sonny Liston knows nothing about boxing.
It was not a dive why did he get up and keep fighting. And the fight should not have been stopped. Ali did not go to a neutral corner. The ref cant count til ali is in the corner Liston knew this and stayed down while ali mobbed him. Liston said Ali was crazy and did not wanna get up with him there. It is like the Tunney Dempsey fight. Dempsey didn go to the corner thus the ref could not start the count. Liston knew the rules. Then the ref whose count is the only one that counts not the time keeper and certaintly not a magazine editor the fight should not have been stopped.
I dont know was it a fix 1 way or another, but i used to work with a bunch of oldtimers who thought, without a doubt, that both fights were fixed after seeing them live
This. Sonny Liston had a granite chin. That little love tap probably tickled him a little. He took a dive.
The punch wasn't to Liston's granite jaw but to his vunerable temple. Angelo Dundee believes the punch was legit he probably knows something about boxing. It would be great to get a panel of ex-Champs to watch it together and get their perspective on it. I'll bet the majority would say it was a legit punch. They show this fight alot on ESPN Classic. There were quite a few ATG's there to see the fight. Liston gonna' take a dive like that in front of them?? I doubt it. A temple punch causes that type of equilibrium loss. This is one of the great controversies in boxing for sure.
