Well if you look at the fight you'll see that he did land some decent combos even though he did grab spinks after he landed. Ali was smart enough to know that he could not continually go punch for punch against spinks so he either got off first and clinched or countered and clinched.

I lent this fight to a friend and he said he had to watch it a few rounds at a time it was so flat out boring.

Each round was a mirror image of the last round.......... Ali's wins with basic boxing finess..... Spinks utterly confused........ Ali W15 Spinks....... ZZZZZZ!

If thats the case, why was he able to box on his toes in the 2nd fight, and not in the first fight? He was in much better shape physically for the rematch.

    Agreed......:deal

Ali was a soft 224 for # 1 and a tighter 221 for # 2..... YES! In this case, 3 pounds made all the difference...... The training overall was different.....

Condition wise, Ali was in much better shape which explains why he was able to move consistently. As far as fighting ability was concerned, it was a startling decline from the first fight. His timing and ability to put punches together had deteriorated.

By 1978, Ali's power had gone south, never to return.......

I heard that he got rolled in Detroit and they took his gold teeth.

I just popped in fight # 1 from Feb. '78... Ali really isn't woefully outta shape at 224 pounds, but rather lazy and lackluster in allowing Leon Stinks to zing a volley of punches early on... Ali made the error of thinking L.S. had no stamina and would burn out late in the 15 rounder... BIG MISTAKE! Ali gave away many early rds on his own terms... Leon Stinks looks fit to the max at age 25 and 197 solid pounds of Marine Core muscle.... IMO!!
