Does anyone know how Art Lurie could possibly score this fight to Ali? I can't see how a fighter can possibly win rounds by lying against the ropes taking a pounding for about 70-80% of the fight. While he had Ali a winner by just a point, is this perhaps the worst single scorecard by a judge in the history of the sport?
No. Judge Doug Tucker scored Mijares/Navarro (a 9-3ish type unquestionable win for Mijares) 120-108 for Navarro. That is the worst card in boxing history.
Scary, huh. That Art Lurie sure needs to see a Psychologist. Cheers for that one on Doug Tucker, kid. :good
Tucker also scored Griffin-Toney II 119-109 in favour of Griffin as well as having DaVarryl Williamson the winner over Wladimir Klitschko.
Because Ali got more favoritism than any fighter in history, that's why. Spinks beat the **** out of him in that first fight, but everyone wanted to maintain the collective delusion that Ali was invincible, The Greatest. It was hard for them to accept that an undisciplined, amateur cruiserweight beat the hell out of their God.
Ali won many a round without throwing a punch, according to some judges. Willie Pep eat your heart out.
What were you guys' card from Ali-Spinks? Myself, I'm too much of a fan boy to have seen it, so I don't know more than it seems concensus that Spinks clearly won.
My card was 11-4 (or 10-5 Spinks). He virtually sweeps the first 10 if I remember correctly then Ali comes back a bit in the final 3rd only for Spinks to finish strongly and win the final round. A farcical decision, which helped Ali in reality, otherwise he'd have lost to a fighter there's no way he could have beaten in a rematch at that stage of his career. Talking of 'sweeping' the first 10. The criminal Marcos Torres had the Lockridge-Gomez fight 'even' after 10. Wilfredo's ability to be constantly beaten to the punch and with his left jaw-to right glove strategy impressing the judge so much.
Judges are professionals like Doctors, you need at least 5 years at medical school to be a fully qualified judge. We enthusiastic amateurs can't hope to have their level of diagnostic ability when scoring rounds, that's why we sometimes don't comprehend judges scorecards, we're just not qualified
Ray Mitchell 75-60 shutout in favour of Lionel Rose against Alan Rudkin. Most people had this very tight either way with another Australian judge scoring for Rudkin. The last round on youtube tells the story.
