Ali won a SD over Earnie, if memory serves me right. IMO, though, Ali was the only one hurt or ever in danger that night, so that has to count for something. Some of the more brutal rounds should have been 10-8 rounds, imo.

BUT...I will say this, as much as I get heated up during Ali discussions, this is THE one fight, that made me truly believe this man may very well have been the greatest HW of all time. He was shot ffs, and took on the greatest monster the ring ever known. Foreman didnt have **** on Shavers when it came to punching power. How Ali survived the 2nd round, let alone go the entire 15 and manage to pull the win, is beyond me.

 

Yeah, his second fight against Lewis is as unreal as it gets. Him just walking around in the ring, taking monster shots by Lewis but appearing absolutely unaffected.

 

And the overrating of Shavers continues. It's easy to look like the biggest monster ever when 3/4's of your KO victims can't crack a .500 record.

Shavers landed big shots in practically all his fights, but still couldn't finish most of the better competition he fought and a number of fighters got off the deck against him to win. Watch the sequence following the Holmes knockdown, for example, and the only thing more impressive than Larry bouncing back was how terrible (and not in a good way) the following shots thrown by Shavers were trying to finish him.

 

I think Shavers is over rated. As a puncher imo. I would not call him the most hardest heavyweight puncher of all time, when Marciano, Dempsey, Louis, Foreman, Tyson, and others have taken out top fighters.


I belive the hardest right hand ever thown in a heavyweight title fight is Marciano Walcott I, round 13, by the Rock.

 

Larry Holmes- 'Shavers hit like he came from another planet'

The only draw backs with Earnie was, he had limitations in stamina, he had a questionable chin, and he wasn't known for being a finisher. He was always looking for the money punch, the proverbial lucky shot, when he was taken into deep waters.

What might have been, had he had more of a killer instinct, or had been more conditioned to go rounds, rather than punch by punch.
