If he is not the greatest then he is as good a choice for the honour as anybody.

In terms of resume his only peer is Louis.

As you have stated many times over, Tyson would have owned Ali. But when looking at their careers would you be able to see the light at the end of the tunnel and say "Ali was a much better heavyweight"?.

If Ali is overrated, god knows what that makes Tyson. Overrated x10?

Let's not. I don't owe you an explanation, go **** yourself. My nr. 1 HW is Joe Louis.

I got him in my top 3 but to say he was the best is too much IMO Louis would have Beaten him, Marciano could have and Dempsey could have and possibly others, Ali was great against the Big Slow guys, had mental strength but had his troubles against the Coopers,Jones,Frazier,Norton,Young, etc. I have Louis as the #1 and Marciano as 2 Ali at 3 but its not written in stone

Yes but then Joe Louis could have disposed of Ken Norton on the undercard of one of his title fights.

I could pick half a dozen of Alis oponents that Louis would have done better against and vice versa.

    I will if you want.

Ali opponents that Louis would have done a better job on

Bob Foster-He is gone before he knows the fight has started

Ken Norton-If he sees the seacond round he is doing well

Floyd Patterson-The 37 year old Patterson that was leading Ali on the score cards before being stoped on cuts would be anihilated by Louis.

George Foreman-Controvertial pick but he is tailor made for Louis and if he catches him he is only catching trouble.

Chuck Wepner-He is gone long before the championship rounds.

Louis oponents that Ali would have done a better job on

Arturo Godoy-While he could give Ali stylistic problems the best he could hope for would be what Chuvalo achieved. No way dose he hold Ali to a SD.

Max Schmeling-Schmeling had the right tools to capitalize on Louis's weakneses and the wrong tools for Ali's. He could give Ali some problems but he is not the man to upset him.

Abe Simon-Would be put in a Holmes Cobbtype shutout by Ali even though he may last the distence. There would be no rematch.

Tony Galento-Ali might get caught by that left hook but there would be no moment of the fight where Galento looked in control.

Buddy Baer-Tailor made for Ali. There will be no knocking of Ali through the ropes to save his reputation.

The greatest in name only me thinks, but top 5 for sure. Head to head Lennox Lewis beats him & Joe Louis, Marciano? Bowe? Tyson?

That's a fair shout, good post. :good

Incidently how do you see a younger version of Patterson faring against Louis? I'd make Louis fave (obviously), however I've always thought Patterson was an under-apreciated fighter (and Champ), stylistically he could potentially give Joe a tricky enough fight. Thoughts?

I think that while he is underrated and would have the style to give Louis problems he would give him the wrong problems.

He would make him look bad for a few rounds and then get blasted into oblivion.
