Because Tyson was sick for the fight. He didnt have that much trouble anyway, Tillis won 3 rounds tops. And I could use the same logic for Ali, if he is so good against Tyson then why did he get dropped and nearly stopped by Cooper?
As much as I love Iron Mike, Ali would deal with mentally before the fight. He'd make Mike doubt himself, and a Tyson who doesn't believe in himself can't beat Ali. It would be close for a while, but down the stretch Ali would prevail, possibly by stoppage.
If you took the Tyson who beat Spinks in 88' and took the Ali from 66' who beat Cleveland Williams (I think that would be the time they were in their respective primes). If they were to fight each other, Ali would keep Tyson on the end of his jab all night long and win a comfortable UD. There isn't a man that has walked this earth who could have beaten that version of Ali. He was untouchable.
I used to have a magazine which did a great feature on Tyson, with great info on every one of his fights. Tyson himself admitted that the combination of the flash knockdown (where hardman Tillis famously smiles then gets back up) and the home crowd sneaked him the decision. It was much closer than you guys are making out.
Muhammad Ali vs. Mike Tyson This one might be the greatest debate in history, but if your like me, and you grew up watching Ali, and then Tyson, you know who would win and why. For me, the easiest way to show you, is to have you watch the Tyson vs. James Buster Douglas fight, many claim Tyson was not training well for that fight, that he didnt have his best people around him and so on and on, big deal, he was the Undefeated Champion of the world, young and in his Prime, and an average Douglas easily beat him, Douglas is what I call a Poor Mans version of Ali, Ali was bigger, faster, quicker, stronger, had more power and speed, could take a better punch than Douglas and moved 10x better, he had everything over Douglas by FAR, so at any point in Tyson's Career Ali beats him. Ali was a more complete warrior than Mike Tyson. In 10 Categories to rate the 2, Style, Chin, Heart, Psychology, Key Losses, Stamina/Endurance, Power Speed, Defense & what I call the IT Category, ALI had it, this is the Unknown factor. Categories Ali gets, 1. Style 2. Chin 3. Heart 4. Psychology 5. Key Losses 6. Stamina/Endurance 7. Speed 8. Defense 9. IT FActor Tyson gets the Power Category and is almost even in Defense & Speed, as he was one of the FAstest and quickest punchers in history and had a great defense, even though it was not needed often. So Ali gets 9 out of 10 Categories, no way Tyson wins. There is also something else to note. Ali, while inferior to Tyson in Power, was no slouch when it came to power and Tyson no slouch in speed. Tyson, on the other hand, had major deficiencies in chin, heart, psychology and stamina. Any opponent who beat Ali did so in a hard fought battle that went AT LEAST 10 rounds. Frazier won a unanimous decision in 15 rounds. Ken Norton won a split decision in 12 rounds. Leon Spinks won a split decision in 15 rounds. Larry Holmes won a TKO in 10 rounds. Trevor Berbick won a unanimous decision in 10 rounds. In order for Tyson to beat Ali he’d have to take him down and take him down quick. Some of the best boxers in American history couldn’t do it and Tyson wouldn’t do it either. This fight would be hard fought for the first few rounds. In round five or six Ali would begin to outclass and frustrate Mike Tyson. Tyson was known to get anxious (as he was known to do) in those middle rounds and take big risks with punches. He’d connect with just enough shots to open himself up for major punishment. The x-factor through the whole Ali—Tyson match up is the clinch. Ali, like Jack Johnson, used the clinch to separate the men from the boys. Ali loved to cup the back of the head with one hand to bend the opponent forwards, and then use his other hand to cup their arm at the biceps. If he kept the elbow of the hand on the opponent's neck close, he could effectively muffle or stop all of their blows, but keep the tie up lose enough that most referees would encourage the clinched man to keep working. It was Ali's greatest trick and he knew it, and it would frustrate Tyson. Also Ali's 7-inch reach advantage with the Best Jab in HW History, would be Tyson's next frustrating thing, he may end up resorting to BITING THE EAR! By round 10, Tyson would be clearly outclassed and looking for a way out. He’d get it in the form of a unanimous decision for Ali, or even possibly, a TKO via the same way James Buster Douglas did it. Sorry Tyson fans, its just not in the cards. DOWN GOES TYSON!
Not sure how you say that, Ali is 10x the fighter Douglas was in all areas, and douglas fought an Ali style fight with against Tyson, so Ali does everything much better than douglas did and wins in the same fashion. that fight showed you Tyson could be beat and how.
Love these threads because they are 70% emotion and 30% bull****. Ali’s 11th fight Sonny banks dropped Ali with a left hook. 20th Henry cooper dropped Ali with a left hook. Joe Frazier beat him with, hey would you look at that! Left hook. Ali, any version, was susceptible to the left hook. Mike Tyson’s best punch? Left hook. Ali knew this. He commented on Arsenio hall with Tyson sitting beside him. It is great to discuss though
I agree with you that Ali would win. But you betray bias. prime Tyson had a great chin, when young less floorings than Ali, & very good stamina, & much heart. Also, how do you not know that Douglas was bigger than prime Ali in every dimension? Not that it changes the outcome for me, but you just have that basic, easily & widely known fact wrong. Like a thread starter who used biased heights-assumed vs. official for each, different reckonings, to say Ruiz is 4" taller than Tyson... You are not being careful with the facts. Which like those who exaggerate-or low ball old timer's weights to make a point.... It erodes credibility.
