This is a purely hypothetical situation.
Let's say that Ali stays retired after regaining the title a 3rd a time after beating Leon Spinks.
Cooney crushes Young , Lyle , and Ken Norton.
Ali decides to make a comeback, but instead of facing Larry Holmes or Mike Weaver, in the October of 1981, decides to face the most popular heavyweight in the world, Gerry Cooney, even though Cooney isn't a title holder.
Ali comes in at a comfortable 235 lbs, while Cooney comes in at 225.
I see Cooney crushing the granite galled Ali, with a wicked left hook to the body ala Ron Lyle in 3-4 rounds.
But my main question is what would each fighters purse be? I think they come away with a split of 20 million dollars each. Twice what Cooney and Holmes receieved. Holmes beats Cooney in 1982, and is very pissed off with Cooney getting a 20 million payday against Ali, money which despite being the true champion, lacking any sort of charisma, he knows he is never going to get lol. Btw it being New Years Eve I've been drinking Blue Moon the past several hours. Cheers to Everyone and Happy New Year from me.

Disgusting matchup to start the yr, but one Cooney would be all over and PREENING to fight. After that he would try to lure Dempsey out before he died in 1983. Then Cooney and his loonies can sneer that the great Dempsey and Ali were no match for Long Islands loon.

well, youre done drinking, I'm jus starting. I was just playing a new years gig with my band, just got home, so its time for ESB and bud lights. Yea, Ali would take a severe beating, BUT, you never know.

what I meant by u never know, did u se how aggressive he was with trever in the beginning? He was throwing shots to hurt right off the bat. If he did that with coooney, if he so much as stunned him, I think he would have gone in for the kill. I don't think cooney had trevors chin. If he stuns him, he would finish him. It would make him look like the best thing ever, don't think it would happen, but is a possability

To all the Ali lovers, this is a purely hypothetical scenario, and no worse than the ass kicking he got from Larry Holmes. Just look at the SI cover that says The Last Hurrah on it.

Another fight where Ali would ensure a beating and a lot of pain, still wouldn't be surprised to see him last the distance and get the win on points after Cooney tires.
