I was watching Ali versus Frazier 3 and noticed neither fighters had on their gloves as they got into the ring for the fight. Does anyone know the history behind why the gloves were not put on before walking to the ring? And, also when the fighters started putting on gloves before making the ring walk.

It takes a long time to get your hands wrapped. I have seen that fight more times than I can count but don't remember that.

I think that was the norm. Don't know when it changed.

I know it was still common to put gloves on in the ring well into the 80’s. Hagler & Duran entered without gloves.

Pretty much to make sure one fighter didn't sneak a horseshoe in there glove.

Great question. Not always easy to find exact answers to such tidbits - unless already out there, that’s an excellent boxing reference book waiting to happen - history of glove sizes, ring sizes etc.

At least we have a clear photo of Dempsey sitting, calmly waiting in his corner in Toledo clearly wearing only hand wraps - must’ve snuck the rail road spike just before gloving. :aaaaa:
