Willie the worm Monroe was behind Ali's corner and heard Ali tell'em to cut his gloves off after the 14th, he was done, he tried to get Fraziers corner's attention but couldn't. When asked Ferdie Pacheco didn't deny it.
That sounds pretty definitive. Too old or not, that was total Gladiator night, probably in some ways better than the first.
I don't believe Ali had an ounce of quit in him. I believe he said it to be nice to Frazier and build himself up more... like... do you know all I had to go through in that fight, I was THIS close to quitting!!
Eddie Futch was hot at Tony Perez for promising to penalize Ali points for the holding but he never did. Later on Perez went to fudge asking for him to vouch for him to get a license in Pennsylvania. Eddie told him either you were corrupt or incompetent but either way we don't need you in Pennsylvania
I don't believe Ali would have quit either. It's possible to his body might have given out the way Robinson's did against Maxim. Ali did collapse on the canvas right after the fight was called some of it might have been relief but Ali also made it hit the wall. But I think what he was going through was real at the time he did feel like he was dying. He had a pressure fighter who he couldn't back up 110 degrees both over 30 and the fastest Pace heavyweight fight history. There is something to be said for a sort of fear that comes in a fight when you hit a man with everything you have and he still coming after you and that's what Frazier always did with Ali.
Not too many could sustain that pace. They were moving like Welterweights. Not many could deal with the heat.
