In 1976 ali signs to fight a little known contender called Larry holmes. Who gives ali a chance in this one? Who thinks holmes beats the aging legend? Ali comes in confident, knowing he has sparred with Holmes dozens of times. He claims he knows Larry better than any one. But then again holmes believe s the same thing. Is this fight to soon for holmes or is it his time to shine? 15 rounds for the undisputed heavyweight championship of the world..
Holmes was a hard fight any time for Ali,and in that year Ali had probably lost to Jimmy Young and scraped by Norton in their 3rd fight, it was post Manila and Ali's decline was well underway. The question is would the younger inexperienced Holmes have enough to take advantage of all this? I've got a feeling at that stage Ali may just about have enough left to hustle and spoil his way to a decision against the less experienced version of Holmes then, but I don't say that with much conviction!
I'm the same. It's ali on the wane but not quite finished. Maybe a couple of good fights left in him. And then we have holmes. A ATG in the making but as yet not quite in the big time. This is by no means the ali who got trounced by holmes. He still had enough to beat Norton and shavers, so perhaps he takes a advantage over Larry with experience. If any one can hustle it's muhammad. How confident could holmes be at this stage? He's facing ali the champ, not the comeback ali of years later. So a few uncertain questions I think to be asked about this one.
Holmes would win, and I think by a margin go 9-6 in round or greater. Ali had slowed down a bit by this time, and to quote Holmes, " Ali kicked me out of his camp because I was too fast form him " well before 1976.
Its possible. Holmes was always going to give ali a tough fight whenever. He had the style to do that. The only thing putting a crumb of doubt in my mind is the timing. Yes Ali may had have kicked him out of camp, but this was for the big time. Ali was still the champ and Holmes just the contender. Does that affect holmes? Could muhammad gain a little mind control in there, a bit of power. I would lean to holmes a few years later and probably do in this match but this is ali we're talking about.
1976 Ali could take a punch, sadly he would probably be doing that most of the fight. The fight goes the distance with Holmes landing majority of punches scored.
Well if Ali could use the judges he had for the third Norton fight he'd still be champ, Ali at this point was pretty used up. He lost to the greenest heavyweight to ever hold the title, Leon Spinks. With judges who could see ,Holmes wins a UD.
It's a pity for history that Holmes did not fight Ali sooner, or get a crack at Foreman. Had Homes beaten Ali in 1976, and Foreman post-Zaire ( say 1977 ) , you could make a real case for him being #1 of all time...and I'd favor him in both fights.
