Should this fight even ever been made (Discount Foster destroying Brother Mike Quarry on the same card) 1972-06-27 : Ali vs Jerry Quarry 2 Ali by TKO in Round 7 Ali made $500,000, while Quarry made $200,000. Ali was the #1 contender, and Quarry was ranked #2. The card was publicized as "The Soul Brothers vs. The Quarry Brothers." Quarry was never down in the fight, but was dominated from start to finish.
Yeah it was fine fight but Ali had his number more than anyone. Quarry would of lost every time to him.
One of Ali's best performances. Afterwards Quarry went on to get two of his signature wins over Shavers and Lyle, before running into the other guy who had his number.
Watching the video of the Foster fight-I thought Quarry's poor brother Mike was shot by someone in the crowd with the way he went down.Ouch!atsch
Absolutely no problem with the Ali Vs Quarry rematch, Particularly considering the manner of the abbriviated ending of the first fight, Ali's Comeback fight, Many felt that Jerry could have come on later in that fight to Test a Rusty Ali, he never got the chance, so no problem whatsoever, However what did/does fasinate me was the Throwing of a 22 year old Mike Quarry to the Deadly Wolf Bob Foster, The Soul Brothers Vs the Quarry Brothers might Indeed of had a promotional ring to it, But Alarm bells should of been ringing in the Quarry Camp, Considering what Bob had done to Rival Champ Vicente Rondon Last Time out, This looked like a suicide Mission, and sadly it nearly turned out to be just that, I think we were very close to seeing a ring tragedy This night, I would of preferred to of seen Mike in with say Jimmy Dupree in a rematch of his own, With Foster in the Opposite Corner Jerry would of been burning nervous energy aplenty, and after that Knockout ... I'm Surprised Jerry could Summon the determination for even a Token effort... As to Mikes Brutal KO Something Sickening appears to Happen which i would of dearly liked an explanation for, Mike gets Hit with the Brutal, Brain Rattling KO Shot, he is out before he hits the ground, .. His Head hits the canvas A secondary Impact he could of no Doubt of done without , Then as he is laying there like he has been shot, and some are already fearing the worst... A quarry Cornerman goes to Mike;s Aid and Lifts his head off the canvas and moves it up and down a few times..theres no resistance... He Places Mikes head back on the Canvas then..and this is the sickening bit... For Some Reason He then seems to pick Mikes Head up again Only to let it go to Smack back on the Canvas.. A totally unnesassry Third Impact ... It does not make pleasant viewing.
A really good post, Area. Some closer was probably noted for the way the first Quarry-Ali fight ended. I think what little chance Jerry may have had (he just didn't matchup well to Ali) went out the window when his brother Mike almost got killed by Foster. Watching your brother get beat is one thing, watching almost get decapitated is another, and to lay there like a corpse takes it to another level. Mike Quarry was never came close to being the fighter he was prior to the Foster fight, add in the beatings he took from Jerry in training and it comes as no shock he died at such an early age.
How about Jerry Quarry vs. Bob Foster? Sure, Foster was KTFO by Frazier KO2 and Ali KO8 but Quarry was not on that kind of level. Could Foster have pulled the upset or at least made a good fight of it? Sure, he was stopped by Doug Jones KO8 and Ernie Terrell KO7 but he went the distance vs. Zora Folley. I do think he improved after these losses.
For the record I'd favor Jerry Quarry (write that shlt down because it's rare) but I do think Foster could give him a decent fight... even if this fight was billed as some type of revenge thing for Jerry's little brother.
A Bob Foster vs JQuarry bout was "informally" proposed a few times by promoters & sports-writers; but upon reflection, I don't think either fighter really wanted that fight. Bob Foster said several times in retirement: "I thought I had killed the kid".....plus Jerry was starting his run beating Lyle & Shavers, and was close to a #1 ranking again (Foreman didn't fight him), so losing a fight to Foster via a freak cut...or something like that, wasn't wise.
Prior to this bout Ali watched film of Jack Johnson. He was so impressed he said he would fight this bout in Johnsons style. Watch the bout and at times Ali is doing a quasi imitation of Jack Johnson.
