It was a dive. Both fights. Liston was going to hold a press conference to talk about the two fights a couple of weeks before his death. Then he ends up dead. I ain't buying it. never have. Why would you want to talk to the press to talk about a fight that happened so many years ago if all you had to say was "yeah, it happened the way it did."
I don't see what the problem is, the footage shows Ali catching Liston with a solid right at the worst possible moment. I don't think it was a dive, he went down. Sonny was so broken mentally by Ali I don't think he felt like getting up, psychologically defeated, by the time he pulled himself up it was just too late. A lot of people wanted this fight to be a fix, in those days both Ali and Liston were despised and that bout alone had the worst attendance rate of any world championship bout in the heavyweight division.
Dont think was a fix too. If was so it would be blown a hell. For me Ali really stunned the world with that punch that became an icon moreless like Tyson did provoking the dramatic "ballet" of Berbick. Ali hit dancing, Tyson hit making dance the opponents. True legends.
Liston should've got an Oscar for his acting trying to get up in the second fight, hes convinced the majority it seems. The Black Muslims had got to Sonny imo
Ali was too strong for Liston. In the first match the Liston's seconds put a stinging ointment upon his gloves to make blind Ali..its proved, but Ali won the same for retire. Liston didnt pretend.
I dont buy it. Plus the stoppage is complete BS. Ali connects 0 clean hits after liston gets up. hahha, and the referee stops the fight.
After getting Ali to a neutral corner, the ref bungled up picking up the count from the time keeper due to the crowd noise. Liston gets up and the fight continues. The time keeper then screams at the ref that Liston had been down for the ten count so the ref stopped the fight.
I'm not saying whether Liston took a dive or not. I'm just pointing out why the ref stopped the fight when he did. Walcott and the time keeper screwed up in the fight. As he is unaware of the count until Liston rises, he actually never starts to count.
Both fights were fixed. Liston was told to dive in both fights or else he would be killed. Don King knew what tactics to play and he played him. Liston would have beaten the living daylights out of Ali, despite his own advanced age (atleast 34-35 years old).
