I have put this in past controversial boxing opinions threads here goes a condensed version Ali dropped Liston with a glancing shot and it was enough to put Liston down. Ali never went to the neutral corner like Dempsey vs Tunney so the ref never counted Liston merely waited for Ali to go to the neutral corner, Ali was right on top of him so Liston didnt have to and probably should not have gotten up as Ali was right there Liston eventually got up fight resumes and then Nat Fleischer from RING Mag not an official but sitting by the time keeper said fights over thats it and Walcott listened to him Walcott never counted because Ali did not go to the corner there for Liston did not get up fight should have been allowed to continue
Kidd, it was the behavior of both Fleischer and Walcott that also struck me as way too damn strange to be coincidence. Ever since it happened, the focus has always been on the wrong thing- whether or not Ali's punch even landed. To me, that's the classic magician tactic of misdirection. The better question, to me, is why was everyone else involved in this so damn eager to get it over with in the 1st? I have no doubts the fight was fixed, and if boxing people weren't expecting it, there's no way it'd have ended up in Lewiston, Maine in the first place. Exactly who was in on it is what we'll probably never know.
Yup Not surprising though, as most boxing fans will tell you that all PED's hinder a fighters' training and performance, that's how stupid these people are.
a paulie malinaggi feint is more punishing than the phantom punch. liston should've been suspended a year and walcott banned from ever refereeing again. however, cj ross said it was the most brutal impact she's seen since dracula bit her in the 1400s.
I see an impact with Ali's fist to Liston's temple. Sonny reacts exactly the way someone with equilibrium problems would do. A slightly delayed reaction where he is rolling around trying regain his senses. Was he that good of an actor? I don't know. I believe Ali hit him with the perfect shot. If Liston was going to take a dive I think he would have picked a better "spot" IMO. One of the greatest KO punches of all time is the way I see it :bbb :good
How in the hell can people believe this was a legit KO? This was the Paul Briggs fiasco 50 years earlier, nothing more.
It's hilarious. The same guys will tell you that a fighter who got busted for PED's or admitted to using them was the most naturally gifted fighter they've ever seen. Apparently they've got the best natural gifts money can buy
Just imagine if the commissions and the boxing insiders were on to the Briggs incident ahead of time and the fight had to take place in a bingo hall. That's the funniest part- it's that boxing was expecting something screwy at the time, which is why everyone with any sort of credibility didn't want anything to do with it when it came down to finding a venue.
a former famous mafia man...frankie morzciano wrote in his book...Liston was used as debt collecter & on his last days was on coke. They have photos together too
Never underestimate the mafia. I read an article that Leonard was connected with the Gambino family. The mafia had a big influence in Vegas years ago.............
This seems to be the standard reaction when a fighter thinks his opponent is faking. Vitali and Danny Green reacted similarly when Solis and Cameron(?) went down from seemingly mild blows. This appears to vindicate Ali.
It wasn't fixed? In their first fight, Ali was menacing Liston that the black panters would have killed his wife and his son if Ali wouldn't have won. Liston went down for phantom punches and simply refused to get up. Those fight were a farce and another disgrace to boxing.
Nation of islam, thats who you mean right? Sonny, overreached with his lead foot of the floor, then was countered with a right to the temple. Over & out despite the count!
Except the two fights are nothing alike in terms of the way they unfolded. Briggs went down off a (missed) jab, and hadn`t thrown a punch in the time before that. Liston had thrown punches, and had also taken a few punches, including a hard right hand in the opening seconds of the fight. And the shot that dropped Liston did so near the temple, as he was reaching in. Nothing about Green-Briggs was legit. Ali-Liston II...Different story, imo.
