Size means little in the hwt division. If Ali would beat Rocky it would have nothing to do with the fact he is taller or weighed more.
Dundee stated that Liston did not intentionally put something on his gloves to blind Ali. If you don't believe it, I'll find the quote.
It means a lot, actually. When was the last 185 pound, 5-11, 67" reach guy who did anything of note in the division, let alone dominated it. Add to that, one who was slow of foot and hand and busted up easily.
In boxing and card playing, there are things called "tells"... inclinations that portend the next move or a pattern in the player that reveals his true ability. The above statement is a tell of someone who really doesn't know shiit about Joe Frazier and is completely talking out of his as*. In Frazier's first 20 fights, he KO'd 18 opponents...9 with his left, 9 with his right. He had an excellent right to the body and right uppercut.
When was the last 49-0 heavyweight with 43 KO's who out trained, out hustled and blasted out opponents with unrivaled power? Marciano had the physical build of a swarmer, that was an asset to him, not a liability. The 'busted up easily' myth never cost him a fight, why would it here? He's fighting in his own decade, before society became queasy at the sight of blood!
Means nothing. I lived all through that time and Joe was a fav. Joe said HIMSELF he had a poor right hand. He developed it very late in his career allowing him to tear up Quarry with it in their second bout. However prime Joe was all hook and he had poor ability to use his right in combination with his left. against Ali in three bouts aside from a handful of rights he landed to Ali's head it was an ineffective weapon. With Frazier if you could control his left hook you beat him. Not an easy task mind you but great boxers when faced with opponents with glaring defects typically capitalize on these defects. Joes main defect was......no right hand.... A poor ability to use that right hand in combination with his hook.
So, Rocky was the only guy who has ever trained hard, the only guy who ever had pace (tho he only averaged about 45 punches a round versus Walcott) and the greatest puncher of all time. Cool story, bro.
Means nothing except the fact that he was KO'ing half his opponents with his supposedly useless right hand. Outside of that fact, and in the realm of nonsense, you are perfectly on target.
If you think Frazier had a good right hand you obviously did not live through that time. This is common knowledge by those who were close to the sport in the 60s and 70s. Complete FALSE revisionism. In fact you could not be more wrong. Not debatable.
He had a serviceable right hand. He KO'd guys with his right. He landed some big telling rights against Ali. He set up his great hook with his right. He worked the body very well with his right. He was not a one-handed fighter. You can fight the facts if they don't fit your narrative but then all you have is a narrative... and those are a dime a dozen.
Marciano like the ATG before and after him had the inherent characteristics of an ATG fighter. Because of this he would be a tough fighter for anyone to beat. Like Johnson. Like Dempsey. Like Louis. Like Ali. Marciano was a hwt fighter with ATG will to win, heart and toughness that you cannot "learn". These are abilities few fighters have within them.
I've never understood those who wish to argue against Rocky's physical attributes, then his intangibles. Is there any other boxer this could be said of. You'd think he never won a fight, the way some people talk! No offense, Seamus.
