I heard this was Ali's only southpaw opponent, and he didn't perform so well here. Where can I find footage of this fight? :think
Here: http://www.dailymotion.com/relevance/search/ali vs mildenberger#hp-h-9 Richard Dunn was also a southpaw. Ali made pretty easy work of him in 1976.
Mildenberger was a bit better than Dunn, and he did nail Ali a few times..in fact he put up a pretty good fight. His chin was his big downfall though, and he went down 3 times with Ali. I think it Jersey Joe Walcott that had said before the fight that Ali was the best heavyweight champ ever, and after the Mildenberger fight he said in Ring magazine that he had changed his nind based on that fight.
I was actually pretty impressed with Ali in this fight, considering that he was fighting a potentially difficult southpaw style over on his home turf. After a few difficult early rounds (which figured to happen), I thought Ali adjusted very nicely and picked him apart thereafter.
Yeah, he didn't look so good, but it was actually refreshing to see an opponent actually giving him a little opposition.
ali made mildenberger roll backwards from a knockdown. karl was a tough man and a good opponent, believe it or not.
My view also. Mildenberger was tricky, and Ali dealt with him pretty efficiently, once he figured his style out.
Ali concerned himself a bit too much with the fact Mildenberger was a southpaw. When he took on Dunn, he didn't bother with things like circling right and the occasional light diversionary hook to the body (yes, he actually did hit Karl with a few hooks to right side of the body). For Dunn, he went directly to the right lead, and probably could have taken Richard out in two rounds.
