In article I read Fight City suggested the courage chin and guile Ali had to show in this bout was more impressive than when Ali was dominatng fighters with the speed of youth, he took more punishment is this bout because he got rocked more than in any other fight. While I agree that this fight proved Ali`s chin more than any other bout, it was dreadful fight in every other regard, do you agree that this fight proved Ali`s greatness more than the Williams, Frazier or Foreman fights?

How in gods name could this be Ali's finest hour? Even worse, how could this fight possibly prove his greatness more than prior victories. Mind boggling this one. I can't even bring myself to read the article after your summation LOL

No. He got battered around the ring by Shavers, landed a few useless flurries on Shavers's gloves to keep the crowd happy, and won a completely undeserved points decision in a fight which far too many people have no issue with. He displayed toughness in that fight. Nothing else.

Ali's chin wasn't proven in this fight. It was just more of what we already full well knew. His chin was immensely proven a long long long time before this fight Mark.

It was certainly one of his toughest last fight s ,no doubts. But I think the Norton third fight showed much the same ,if anything Ali was in more danger of losing THAT fight .Norton put a lot more pressure on Muhammad in a skillful way then Shavers.

If that fight happened today, the General Forum (and probably this one too) would be melting down with the "EXPOSED!!!" and "I told ya he was never any good!" threads. Ali looked very hittable and beatable that fight and there's an asston of fighters that, had he been in there with them that night, would have cleaned his clock.

Yeah, Ali could take a shot and grit it out. Kudos for that. But that alone does not an ATG make. The Shavers fight proved he was on the way out imho.

I've heard this opinion before, mainly based of the merit of coming through that second round against a massive puncher far past your prime etc. Agree that Ali had many more "finer hours" than his performance in the Shavers fight.

This fight badly damaged Ali. How Ali was able to convince Shavers he wasn't hurt is beyond me. He was. One of the fights I'd like to score again.

It's very important on here to be the first one to declare that somebody was "EXPOSED":calimero1:

It was proven but not like this, Foreman hit him with some good shots, but Ali`s defense was far better in the Foreman fight, I`ve never seen Ali rocked like he was vs Shavers, even when he was knocked down by Frazier, his legs were more stable, Shavers hit far harder than Frazier and George couldn`t wobble Ali either, recent research has been released that experts site the Shavers fight as the point wherre Ali developed Parkinson`s because scars were found on his brain ina scan and his speech slowed from this point on.

Ali`s movements were slower after the Shavers fight.
