This fight is always used as an example of a 'prime' Ali and don't get me wrong it's a great display of ability. But does holding this win in such high regard overrate Ali's prime? I recently found out that Williams was inactive for over a year before he fought Ali due to a gunshot wound.

This guy was literally shot, and not just 'past it' because of a receding hairline (a la Oscar/Pacquiao)

So what's Ali's second most impressive performance before he was stripped of his licence?

:huh The win isn't held in high regard, the performance is, and it's great, in your own words. :conf

Isn't the performance a questionable one due to the highlighted circumstances? Do you not think?

Yeah, no one really puts much value in the win. Ali looks freakishly good. Even against a literally shot opponent, a Heavyweight shouldn't look that impressive. That's the whole point of it.

I think his best pre-exile performance (minus the first Liston fight) is his showing against Terrell.

Hey Guys im new to East Side Boxing.
But iv been a Boxing fan all my life.

I think Ali is extremely overrated( But still Great tho). the injuries Cleveland had sustained would end most pro careers
Ali beat a deterioated Williams, but got the credit based on Clevelands achievements before he was badly hurt.. kind of like Holmes beating Ali, but Holmes never got no credit "Smiley face" (can someone tell me how to make a smiley face please)

:think Perhaps his footwork wasn't actually real but an optical illusion? Can someone take Williams out of the footage and see if he's really that athletic?

Hey, man. Look, some of the best displays of great fighters' attributes are not coincidentally against opponents who are perfectly ill-equipped to deal with the attributes being pointed to. See: Locche VS Fuji. It's one of the best filmed displays of a masterclass, and, well, not directly comparable as it's more relevant and a fresh guy, but the epitome of Locche's defensive work on display against a wide, wild, crude puncher. It's not a coincidence, you know, but it's rated as an amazing piece of work for a reason. It looked amazing and was.

it was'nt about how good the opponent was, it was about how good ali was that night.
sometimes, on any given night, a fighter is better than he's ever been before, and better than he ever will be again.
this was ali on that night, a great fighter, at his absolute peak, everything coming together, the speed, power, footwork, everything. it was a thing of beauty.

:patsch You guys ever been in the gym and see a guy hitting the bag like hes George Foreman, only for him to get in the ring and look completely foolish? Ali's opponent was ****ing shot in his damn stomach, how could anyone possibly sit there and give him credit for that? Ohhh yea same people who give him credit for his "wins" against Sonny Liston. HAHAHAHAHAHHAAHAH Wladimir, and Vitali would stop Ali in less then 6
