If any of you believe that Ali hated white people, it's a bold faced lie. All you ever see is footage of Ali going at white people, commenting on white people and even dissing white folk. But every interview that you see like that......you can times that by 10 million where he's shown that he loves everyone.

Ali had to create a voice for us black folk back then, and in order to do that he had to look the man in his eye and let him now that we do not have freedom, justice and EQUALITY. Do you know how many towns he's been to here and abroad where there were all white audiences and he let them know how he felt, the condition of our black brethren and how he does not hate white people.

This sums up Ali's thoughts on white people back then:

Ali said that if there was a room full of 10,000 snakes, and 1000 of them didn't want to bite Ali, but the other 9000 did...should he leave the door open and hope that the 1000 snakes who didn't want to bite Ali would come together and sneak out or should he close the door and not get bit at all!!!???

Ali is a legend. Great in the ring but the things he did outside the ring impress me even more.

Standing up against the powers that be for the reasons he did was beyond brave and I couldn't even imagine any current boxers having the depth to even be aware of similar current issues and the strength to fight against them.

I don't, even if he did once I'd somewhat understand him given how blacks were treated during his time.

Ali evolved over the years. He was embraced by the majority of people in the world. Admired for his accomplishments and who he was. Even Malcolm X changed some of his views in the later stages of his life. People that cannot change....die. Maybe not right away...but they stop growing. I have met a lot of people of varying accomplishments/fame/wealth in my life. I can say that when I met Ali he was nicer to me...a complete stranger..than 99.9999 % of the people I have ever met. In fact, of those I have met that were famous or rich....many of them were dismal excuses for human beings. Very disappointiing to see those commenting negatively on Ali at this time. He just passed. Noone is perfect. Ali was not a saint but he was a damned fine example of many things. A man should be courageous...he was. A man should stand for what he believes and should reach higher than what he is.....he did. I could spend time expressing things with which I might have disagreed with.....but I could do that with anyone I have ever known. Hell, I don't even applaud or agree with everything I do sometimes. Ali is a national treasure. He set a standard that very very few will ever come close to. Let us remember him and his family in our prayers at this time. Even atheists could take a moment...it won't hurt.

Ali is the greatest fighter of all time PERIOD!!! In and out of the ring. Mentioning Floyd in this thread is laughable. When Floyd passes he`ll be a segment on ESPN and a mention on all the news outlets. Floyd has cherry picked his way to a greatness in his own mind and in the mind of his naive sheep. Outside the ring he has done ABSOLUTELY NOTHING to make this world a better place for blacks or the poor. Dont give me no bs about him donating turkeys or paying for fighters funerals. He has spent more money on gambling then he has on charity. Floyd isnt fit to be the dirt on Ali`s shoes.

Sorry if you got the impression that I feel atheists are souless animals with no empathy. Just that I am used to atheists often expressing anger and disdain if anyone ever mentions the concept of prayer. Therefore my words. understand the idea of getting to know one before opinions. used to be one myself. if nothing else we feel the same sorrow at Ali's passing.

How can we be sure that he wasn't really just a draft-dodger who latched-on to that "no Viet Cong never called me ******." excuse?
