tommy farr really is remembered for his excellent challenge to joe louis but if you look at the rest of his resume against other contenders it's pretty average to say the least.he was a genuine savvied up tough guy with an awkward style, but he does tend to be overrated by some.he also in later years swore by the old timers of his generation and very rarely had good words to say about the then modern day fighters of the sixties.

Prime Ali beats every other Heavyweight, and a lot of the ATG's with relative ease.

    Id pick Ali over Louis.

Whilst Louis had great combinations, and a great fighter in his own right, he was dropped by far lesser fighters than Ali, Tony Galento anyone?

Also Ali had one of the best chins ever and this again would cancel out Louis power.

I think Ali would pick him apart with little trouble and maybe stop him late.

Sorry but Braddock was not excellent at anything. And Ali timed people very well, Billy Conn was a light heavy with zero pop and he was winning until the 13th when stopped. Let's be honest he has basically no chance at stopping Ali and every chance at being totally outboxed and hurt himself.

Ali would have beat Louis in my opinion although I would have been interested in what he would have said in the build up to the fight!

I always feel Marciano is a tad overrated in an historical sense, maybe because he was such a down to earth likeable guy who everybody liked (still a great fighter mind you, but not as great as he's made out to be sometimes).

And certainly Dempsey, i feel, is overrated. His championship reign was very carefully managed, avoiding the great black fighters of the day like Harry Wills, and Harry Greb who beat the bejeezus out of him in a couple of sparring sessions.
Greb of course was one of the very greatest, but he was still a natural middleweight.

I see Ali beating Louis not just with his speed, but with his heart toughness and above all, his creativity. As great as Louis was, it wasn't as if he did a lot of different things in there, and Ali's versatility and mobility would have been too much for him IMO.

It's really a matter of adding things up; Ali was faster AND bigger AND much more mobile. That's a very convenient combination of advantages right there.

The only physical advantge Louis had was punching power, but i think Ali had a better chin and he wasn't a bad puncher himself although he's sometimes made out to be one.

I don't know, maybe Louis would have beaten Ali if they fought. We will never know.

    Correct

He would've hit him with the whole kitchen, not just the rice.

It would have been interesting to see if Ali would have been able to clinch Louis as much and gotten away with it, the way Ali always clinched when a good fighter tried to zero in on him..

Now that's a film in your avatar.

Louis was far from a great defensive fighter and would've been tagged often by Ali, who'd have cruised to a UD, though in more of a defensive mode.

It's ridicliously under-appreciated. I've seen a lot of great films being a media student and a film-buff, and The Prestige is always in my top 10. I actually just finished watching it for about the 7th time, and I'm currently reading the book. I never read, but I loved The Prestige so much I felt obliged to read the source material. They are distinctly different in many ways. I'm glad you appreciate the film as much as I do.

I believe Louis vs Ali wouldn't be a great spectacle due to Ali's superiority in speed, size, and reflexes.
