"Ali-Young" of '76 was iffy at best in action, yet Ali did edge Young.

I'm off tonight from the salt mines and I got my tape rolling again as I blog with my King Cobra 40 ouncer on the side, and here in round 9 Ali is up on his toes circling and jabbing at Young who is slipping, ducking and moving BACKWARDS looking to keep outta harms way.... Young is poised but offering zippo in offense... Young looks just glad to be there....

    President Ford's boy is ringside....

    MR.BILL:bbb

    EXTRA:

Come round 12, Ali battered Young in the corner pretty good... Young now dipping through the ropes in round 13..... Jesus, that stinks by Young.......

Ali gets the dec. after round 15 is all I'm saying.... The judges range was corrupt and sketchy, but Ali by a point or two is fair / fine with me... Young never went after the belt... 'Nuff said....

Webianno and Zadfrak already said it best. The years 1976-1978 were a lost era for heavyweight boxing, because we had a pampered, bloated king on the throne, with so many blind subjects at his feet. Boxing history has been permanently distorted by what occured in those years. Ali was to boxing what Jennifer Aniston is to People Magazine...a once attractive figurehead that the ignorant public can't ****ing get over.

Never went after the belt.? such bull****. Scored 10pt must system i believe, or was it 5, don't matter he won the rss, that's all that counts. Got to admit, after watching that fight about a yr or two ago after a similar discussion, jimmy did do the head out of the ropes more than I remembered. But like I said then, if Ali did that, you Ali nuthuggers woulda said how geniouse that was . Just depends who was doing it. Jimmy made Ali look like the ass he was, as did Ernie, kenny, Leon, alfredo, let's see, who am I forgetting? Jimmy OWNED Ali that night, fought a very smart, conserative fight. Had he gone for the kill, which he could have, and probably got it, you would have been saying what a fool he was, he had the fight won on pts, but got careless, and got food, cause you know Ali couldn't ko him, but a premature stoppage by the rec was a shure thing had he had the excuse, actually, maybe Jimmy was smarter than we give him credit for. Any good flurry from Ali could have gotten the def to stop it, ever think of that? Me either

Young stunk against Ali in '76...... I have never seen such a "Ho-Hum" challenger in all my life..... I'm GLAD the judges gave Ali the nod after 15 rds of sparring......

This. The thing is, many of those blind subjects are still around. There are some posters, when the subject of Ali comes up, you just KNOW their POV before you even read what they have to say.

Funny you should say that, because I knew you'd say this in the other current thread on Ali:
"Without his personality (and aura) I believe some later close decisions, i.e. Young, Norton III & to a lesser extent Shavers, would probably have gone against him."

Do you yourself believe that Bokaj, because if not you really are blinded by your idolisation of Ali.

Bokaj, that's because I believe what I've written to be true, like all of us!

Do you disagree with the opinion I've expressed that you've quoted on the other thread, or put it another way, do you think what I have said has some merit or that I am anti-Ali?

I am not anti-Ali, but I have grown tired over the years of the mass media's portrayal of him as (until some alternative views expressed recently) a saintly figure, without flaw, one I believe whose flaws have largely been brushed under the carpet by the mass-media.

It has appeared to me that for many years it has been taboo to write anything that may be deemed to be detrimental about Ali; just my opinion mind:good

I don't belive that Ali is different from any other popular champion. Young, Norton III and Shavers were all close fights and could all have gone against Ali. But it seems reasonable to say more or less the same about Louis concerning Farr, Godoy and Walcott. Even Holmes had Witherspoon and Williams. And Spinks took his crown by a very narrow margin despite very clearly winning the fight IMO. Tyson was drawing against Douglas according to the judges etc etc.

I don't have any of Ali's win as bad as Toney's over McCallum in the rematch, PBF:s against Castillo in the first fight or Holyfield getting a draw against Lewis. I could go on.

In short, I think it's quite childish to make out like Ali was the only champion to get the nod in close fights. Loads of champions have gotten the same treatment.

I agree he was not the only champion who received iffy decisions and didn't say that.

Regarding Louis, I don't think the Farr fight was debatable - I think that's a myth handed down over the years on my side of the pond. Whatever is said about the Godoy & Walcott decisions, Louis did rematch them, which is more than Ali did with Norton after Yankee Stadium.

My main gripe is what I believe the mass media's largely one-sided treatment of Ali, as I explained in an earlier post.
