The movie....anybody like it (Will Smith) How close to fact was the movie? Man he gave Liston some crap at the weigh in Did he say those things for real? Can you name another actor that could have pulled off Ali as well as Will did?
Never seen the movie but Ali went nuts at Liston pre fight, not just at the weigh in. Drove to his house one night with his crew and woke him up and challenged him in the street. Did call him all sorts of names and drove him mad. Liston wasn't in a position to react due to his criminal record. It would have made a pretty bad looking bloke even worse, so he held back. Ali went so nuts at the weigh in doctors took his blood pressure, and were trying to stop him fighting the next day they were so worried about him. But it was all an act. He worked himself up to the point people truly thought he'd lost the plot at the weight in, but I've seen footage of him winking to his crew not long later with half a smile on his face. First time they ever met, Liston slapped him.
What year 65? May 25th First minute First round. Angelo Dundee " He hit him so quick the camera's couldn't take it, He bat him with a shot Liston didn't see. They're the worst ones, the ones you can't see" - In the middle of I am King by David King.
From what I can tell of the video of the fight, it looks like the ref didn't hear the bell ring first few times, then pulled it up when he did. Clay lands a jab and a nice left hook in that time. Liston lands nothing.
In the movie....Liston punches on because Ali kept moving out of the way Also do you know if Liston tried to blind Ali with somethig on his gloves?
Yes that happened for real too. Mate the best way to read the story is to get a hold of the book "King of the World" by David Remnick. It's an incredibly good book which covers the title reigns of Floyd Patterson, Sonny Liston and Ali. Each preceding guy beat the other to become heavyweight champ, and the stories are connected that way in the book, as well as explaining "mob" involvement in running boxing in those days. If you like this movie (I've not seen it) you'll love the book.
I'm sure much of the film is embellished or thrown together to accommodate telling how ever many years worth of story in a tiny 2 hrs or so. But I thought it was good and I don't think anyone would have done as well as Will did...
Ali vs Foreman, or Ali vs Liston II you need to download? Liston I was a classic.. Young harmless boxer vs Murderous Brute.. The Bully got Bullied and wilted in claiming a 'popped shoulder'... The Linament activities were in Liston I also.... Ali vs Liston II is a total mystery.. looking at HD footage, the right hand landed by Ali wobbles the **** out of Listons brain.. did he take a dive? Could he have risen??? If Walcott had total control of the uncontrollable Ali after the knockdown, the maybe Liston would have not been counted out.. maybe he could have got up?? Either way, he was never getting back to his feet with a 6' 3" genius in his midst, behaving eratically and looking for a chance to bang Liston out for real.
