Pretend for a moment that Ali chose never to play to the crowd, never toyed with his opponents, never willingly gave a lackadaisical performance where he'd take rounds off (unless necessary for stamina reasons), and never carried his opponents. What would his knockout percentage be?
I think he would have a few more KOs or maybe stoppages a little earlier in the fight. On a side note Archie Moore wanted to tweak Ali`s style a little when he got him out of the Olympics and make him a puncher. He felt that Ali wouldn`t of had to take as much punishment if he ended fights earlier. Ofcourse that works both ways he woud`ve also caught more big shots in the process.
Archie Moore said that Ali refused to punch to the body. His preferred target was the top of the head, so he probably caused his own hand problems. He also would have been hit a lot more because his defense was almost 100% based on jumping in and out of range- his blocking skills were negligible (he never ever figured out how to block a left hook) and he didn't slip punches, he pulled back from them.
I have the strong feeling that Mac Foster and Rudi Lubbers would n't have made the final bell and that Muhammad would have stopped Chuck Wepner,Ron Lyle and Richard Dunn earlier than he did. By the time he got to Alfredo Evangelista,he was beyond stopping ANYONE,really. The likes of George Chuvalo and Joe Bugner were always pretty durable,so the results would have been the same.
Pretty much agreed. when Ali really sat down on his right hand it could stun alot of heavies. He put his best mustard on it against Chuvalo but unless you were Foreman you weren't going to get George's attention. I don't think he trained a lick for Mac so I wasn't surprised he lasted and he didn't want to stop Terrell from taking punches in their go.
Good posting. Ali technically left a lot to be desired like your saying but that also speaks volumes about his athleticism because that's what let him avoid most punches, like you said he really never learned how to slip or skillfully block.
