Norton claimed in his book that he was 6'2 and 3/4. So 6'2 and 1/2 is about right for Ali. Ali looks to be about a 1/2-1 inch shorter than Norton so I'm thinking Ali was about 6'2 even maybe a hair taller...Ali had the bigger hair though
Yes but non of these pictures is very good though. Ali often tilt down a bit with his head, Norton up. The picture when both men standing on the grass, Ali is standing with a wider stance, etc etc. So many circumstances. The picture when they are face to face, we don't see there shoes.. and so on. But to me, Norton seems to be a shade taller, if both was standing together and straight up, i think Ali would gain a little bit in such a picture. But he ain't taller for sure. Ali's passport evidence feels quit ok to me. Maybe a shade under 6'2 and a half. Possible 6'2 2/5 or something like that, no arguing about it however.
Qoq, already 15 PAGES just on precisely how tall Ali was! i love this place. I have seen his reach also listed from 78 to over 80" If someone starts a thread about that it could go 100 pages! ;-0
As for reach: 82 inches is also stated: http://news.bbcimg.co.uk/media/images/73218000/jpg/_73218407_73218406.jpg But the most accurate i found about that is in fact 78 1/2 to 79 1:05 in the video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fuX7FlddCRg If you listen closely he first says 78 inches, then 78 and a half and then he finally says: 79 inches. So Ali: 6 foot 2 1/2 inches tall with a 79 inch reach. That's about it i think
http://afflictor.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/09/alilouis123.jpg I had a few pictures of him and Louis and Joe looked the same size give or take http://blogs.britannica.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/01/ali-liston2.jpg this one looks like both were up a half an inch because Sonny was 6" 1/2 but later they changed Ali to 6"3, I think the extra inch looked good on the posters
Ali and Foreman were always listed as 6'3", till Foreman made his comeback and started listing self as 6'4"
I love these "height" threads! Pictures are always interesting but they can be very deceptive. In the above picture with Ali and Louis posing, Louis looks to be a couple of inches taller than Ali, which would put him in the 6'5" range. Obviously, Joe wasn't anywhere near that tall. On a personal level, I've been about a half-inch taller than my brother ever since we were young men. We're both now middle age and in some pictures when we pose together, I seem to tower over him way more than 1/2 an inch; In other pictures, he actually looks taller than I am. Weird effect. I guess the only real way to know exact height is to actually measure. Are fighters routinely measured for height?
I remember reading in George's autobiography (By George) that he mentioned one of the things that he remembered most about Ken Norton was that 'Norton was tall'; George didn't say that about Ali or Lyle or any other opponent -- but he said it about Norton (Norton was tall). Take that for whatever it is worth. But Norton stated in his autobiography that he was 6'2 3/4" (I presume as measured by the marines); and such a precise height measurement seems to indicate a very accurate measurement; not one of those 'I'm about 6'3" or I'm around 6'2" -- but a very specific number: 6'2 3/4" .And a barefoot 6'2 3/4" measurement is a tall measurement.
