What you think is it overrated when Ali beat Liston in 1964 and 1965? If we compare Liston to the current heavyweights, he would be just around top 15, but not the best one there. Liston fought mainly only cruiserweights, now the fighters are bigger over 230lbs. His power and size wouldn't be advantage in this era. Liston was also past of his prime when he fought Ali.
Comparing past eras in boxing will always be a problem. Certainly when it comes to the HW division because of obvious reasons.
Most HW's from the pre Ali era, wouldn't stand a chance against most current HW's, no matter how average they may be. I'm not so sure how the fighters of Ali's era would fair, they wouldn't stand a chance against Lewis, Vitaly or Wlad.
Liston quit in the first fight even though it was a draw through 6 rounds on judges scorecards. And he took a dive in the 2nd fight in the 1st round. Liston sold out for money and fixed those fights no doubt about it.
Under rated if anything..Liston was awesome. Crushed all opposition, great jab and huge power. Regularly broke sparring partners ribs ...with 22ib gloves!
The issue is that until he faced Ali about 2/3rd of his opponents were under today's CW limit and only 5 were 210+Lbs HW's, without a single one in the 220 range. There's a good reason to think a lot of the current heavies would maul Liston's opposition because they were so damn small. That's why I think comparing different eras in HW boxing is kinda pointless.
Well in that case robbery and cst, why don't ye campaign for the creation of s new "heavyweight" division, say above 220, to reflect the fact that men today are bigger. Or even 2 new divisions 220-250 and above 250....???? But I do still think Liston would trouble anyone, any era, any size...:thumbsup
I guess most would call him unproven at HW if he fought today. If Wlad fought Liston's opponents today they wouldn't just ridicule him, he would be burned at the stake by an angry mob.
