I never said anything before because I thought it was perhaps inappropriate. But I wonder if head size has a lot to do with these deaths? Dadashev had a relatively small head. You see a lot of guys with good durability and chins have huge watermelon heads.

I don't think so necessarily. Mercer didn't have a big head for his size. I think it might be skull thickness. Maybe big heads = thicker skull usually?
Johnny Owen had a thin skull, but thick mandible. Bad combination.

It's not only about head size, but neck size as wel. Dadashev had a long, thin neck - which is not ideal when it comes to taking punches to the head.

Everyone has 3 layers of protection between their brain and skull called meninges. The dura mater is the rubbery layer that protects the brain from moving around in the skull. They vary in thickness in everyone, some people are blessed with very, very thick protective layers and some have very thin layers. Obviously the thicker the protective layer, the more padding your brain has and the lesser the chance of being concussed or knocked out.

I don't know if many of you guys remember the Lindros brothers of the NHL. Both huge dudes, and both plagued by concussion issues that forced them to retire. It turned out they both had unusually thin protective layers surrounding their brains and was why they were constantly sustaining concussions despite being huge, strong, tough as nails dudes. Brett had to retire at just 21 years old due to repeated concussions. Just unfortunate genetics of the brain.

Neck size is also a big factor. They have done studies in college football where specific neck strengthening exercises where introduced and the following seasons concussions were reduced significantly. A large neck absorbs a lot of force and stops the head from snapping back.

Tarver has a 17 inch neck. Proof:

While the average neck circumference for an adult male is 15 inches in the USA.

    What is your point?

Beautifully done as usual. I thought you did justice on providing tribute to an utterly tragic situation here.

Small head and long, skinny neck for a guy that size. I’m not saying neck doesn’t help to some extent. Not so sure about head size.

Tarver is a natural light heavyweight, a 17 inch neck is not skinny for a LHW. Stiverne and Wilder are heavyweights and they have 18 inch necks. We don't know Tarver's head circumference but I bet he has an at least average sized head. It just looks small because of his shoulder width.

Chuvalo was referring to a thick neck. He said guys with skinny necks shouldn't box.
