I can't remember, I'll check. But that's a Philly connection, so probably not.

Grist to the mill. September 16, 1911.
"Sam Mcvea, the colored heavyweight boxer, arrived in Sydney this morning. In the course of an interview he stated that he thought Lang was too old and not clever enough to be a champion. He believes that Jack Johnson is afraid to meet Langford, who is the hardest hitter at present in the ring."

Regarding his own chance against the champion, he says he is not confident that he could beat him. McVea docs not think the present-day Australian pugilists are to be compared with the men' of 20 years ago. The colored heavyweight stands 5ft. 11 in. high, and weighs 14 stone. He was welcomed at the station by a crowd of about 3000."

Johnson rings Billy Gibson of MSG long distance , says he willl defend against Joe Jeannette for $30,000.[This is dated July 27th 1912.]
    Gibson offers s$20,000 .
Johnson says he can get that much for fighting second raters.

There is a more detailed account of the offer by Gibson ,and Johnson's refusal in the NY Times of the day but its not allowing me to post it. Seems to me Johnson was not averse to meeting Jeannette as long as his price was met.He signed to fight him twice ,only to have the plug pulled by" outside pressures ". Johnson took the intiative and challenged his challenger but the DO RAY ME was not forthcoming.
The San Francisco Call ,below confirms Johnson's stance.
