    I think that's a bit US-centric perspective. World wide, I'd say that there are more practitioners today.

    it is very difficult to accurately assess the greatness or otherwise of a sportsman when they are plying their trade. After they have retired for good and some time has passed, a boxer's place in the pantheon becomes more apparent. I think people do tend to denigrate the current fighters at the expense of the legends of the past because the stories of the legends are complete. The current fighters are like unfinished artworks; only when they've retired and we take a step back and look at the career from all angles can we really rate them.
