Boxing was better years ago, because less was more. We do not Setanta showing every single second of the sport, we need ITV or the Beeb to have a quality prime time show on every couple of months; perhaps the odd American show one or twice a year, and add in a midweek highlights package like we got in the 80s.

This way if you are a proper fan, you would actually go to shows if you wanted to see boxing.....

Don't know what you're on about mate. How many 'proper' fans are going to be able to go and see Marquez, Pavik, Darchinyan, Cotto etc?

Thousands watch their fights. Believe it or not the Monzon's, Duran's, Foster's and Napoles' were not on TV either, but they all made amazing reputations for themselves, because if you were a real fan back then, you found a way to watch them.

But more importantly you probably went to your local show at least once a month and your money helped local promoters and fighters more than these huge promotions and TV companies.....

And it has ruined the sport! Seeing a great fighter (live) should be a once year experience, that way you hunger for more. At the moment people get whatever they want, and it is a reason why the sport is dying.

Also to have only three tv channels, more power cuts, less jobs and a reversal of decimalisation by the sounds of it...

    Well.....

There are many good things today, but 300 TV Channels and boxing on seemingly 24/7 in one form or another, is not one of them.

Boxing is about anticipation and sometimes not getting what you want straight away, that way you build up rivalries and the fights seem to have more meaning.

Boxing today goes over my head, once de la Hoya and Holyfield finally finish, there will be no superstars left period and little potential for future development of mainstream worldwide superstars because the sport lacks mainstream appeal.

So perhaps there is need to look back and find out why this sport was arguably the second (behind football) biggest worldwide of the 20th century? And a couple of the answers are; the fancy supporting local fighters, and has been mentioned, three (indeed sometimes less) TV Channels.....

I fail to see how not showing big fights will improve the profile of boxing. Compared to other main stream sports boxing has a small fan base in the u.k. Surely the more fights with big name fighters that are shown live the better.

I love the fact that the internet allows me access to watch fights live from around the world. I do have a little nostalgia for the days of 3 channels, Big Fight Live and SportsNight where everyone the next day in school/ work had seen the same fights as you and British champions were household names but, on balance, I like the freedom of choice that the internet/ multiple channels offers.

Your argument goes over my head mate :patsch

Do you think if there was less boxing on TV that would be good for the sport?

If they only showed the Champions League final once a year then the anticipation would be massive. Would it make football anymore of a global spectacle...............................NO!

We need the biggest fights live. How many of us have traced a fighter's development through their TV fights? A lot, I would say. There is no point having the biggest and best on TV if no one has had a chance to view them at first hand before. We need to get used to the boxers through undercard fights, youtube, DVD's etc before we garner an opinion as to their worth. That is what makes the big fights so special, the background work.

I wouldn't be a tenth as excited about Marquez - Diaz 2moro night if I hadn't watched a good few of their fights already.
