But there are no big name fighters!!!! I could go to work in the 80s, and 75% of the male workforce would of heard of Duran, Hearns, Leonard, Hagler, Holmes and probably Spinks. Today I reckon less than 1% would of heard of a Klitschko, Paciquao, Mayweather or Mosley. We need to start from a regional base, get people interested in local fighters, and then if they are interested in the sport they will start to follow other fighters, and maybe we could get this sport back off the canvas.
But it would!!! That has been shown by the FA Cup. Remember in the 70s live Football consisted of a few England internationals, The World Cup, European Championship, the annual England/Scotland game and the FA Cup Final. The FA Cup was so important, there would of been serious debate as to whether winning the cup was bigger than winning the league. But now a days because you get your 100+ Premiership games, plus all your Champions League etc live, the FA Cup has lost a ton of meaning.
When Scott harrison was champ and fighting regularly at Braehead the hall only filled up when Harrisons fight was due on apart from when Kahn was on the bill and also when Anthony Farnell fought Lawrence Murphy. The reason for that being that most peple who go to shows are only there for the event they are not real fans of the actual sport. The only way people find out about boxers is through the media unfortunatly. I see your point but i think thats more a grass roots problem. If there is a big fight on setanta at 2 in the morning i dont think thats going to effect the crowd at a local town hall where there is a boxing show on earlier in the night.
The FA cup has lost some of its meaning because of the importance the "top clubs" attach to getting a top 4 finish, champions league qualification and having good runs in that competition not because more games are televised. Its purely financial.
Yes because Football is overexposed. But Football is lucky because it has a much bigger fan base, with generally excellent local facilities and infrastructures all over the country. Boxing never got his house in order when times were good, now times are bad, the sport is really struggling.
tbooze...i think you are trying to make a well-meaning point...but for me its very wrong. what about the poor fooker living on the isle of man on minimum wage with a family....and he's a boxing nut...got loads of books, dvds, etc collected over the years... is it right that he would see LESS on tv and be expected to get to fights, with the price of travel, tickets etc..? and...if a true boxing fan wants to go to a fight..i don't think it being on tv would stop him going..not a boxing fan..if it's somewhere he can get to, and can afford it..he will go..regardless of tv coverage.
I don't see how that disproves my point. In fact it reinforces it a great deal. Why would anyone wan't to watch Brighton v Weymouth Town in the 3rd round of the FA Cup if they could see Man Utd v Barcelona in the Champions League on a different channel. Variety gives choice. Over the years the value of cup competitions has plummeted throughout Europe. For some reason people in England continue to hold onto the "mystique" of the FA Cup, even if the major clubs have given it up as some Micky Mouse competition. No one in Europe gives a flying **** about their cup competitions, and just use it as a testing ground for their reserve/youth players. If they get to the quarter or semi finals, they might take it a bit more seriously, but not if it interferes with proper (ie: League and Champions League) business. With Boxing, if it was a choice between Marquez-Diaz and Murat-Sanavia (I know they don't clash, but say they did) then I would pick the Marquez fight every time. If I could watch both live (which I will be able to do) then I'll be like a pig in ****.
Im gonna assume Tbooze is on the Booze lol Then again, perhaps he's right. The best way to promote boxing in the UK is not to show it lol
I totally agree, so unless it is a truly massive fight with genuine National appeal, is there a need to show it on TV? Should not TV boxing be the very best the nation has to offer and the very, very best the world has? And should that coverage not be free to the public? Do not get me wrong, I have the SKY's And Setanta's and could have the sport on all the time, but I find myself losing interest. I have seen one live bill since 1994, and yet in the late 80s and early 90s I went to see live boxing at least once a month. If I am losing interest, I dread to think what casual fan thinks of the sport.....
well..i can only repeat what i said about the poor fella on the isle of man...the telly is his only way to see that fight.. also...the boxing on telly..is mainly british title level upwards {with the exception of that joke tournament 'prizefight' which i dont like at all}.. and i consider british title level to be a very high level in boxing. you say you agree with me...but i'm sorry brother, i dont agree with you..
Well as far as I can see. The fights on Sky and Setanta I've watched the arena is usually always full anyway so its a bit of a moot point in a way. People are going to the fights
