The reality is that there is no skill in cutting a fighter except punching them, but its a completely random event. If we are stopping a fight for a fighter's safety due to injury but that fighter can continue fighting, then what is the point of a TKO win? Every fighter can fight with a bad cut. Going to the scorecards after the 6th, in my opinion, allows for the better man to win the fight. Its just such a bogus way to win similar to Lewis/Vitali and Wallin/Fury. Wallin was getting outboxed but under this rule would have won the fight and become champion. Then we would have had a pointless rematch that Fury would have won and further delayed Wilder/Fury. If you caused the cut and you were winning rounds (which you should have because the fighter is fighting with one eye) then you win the fight. But if you were losing rounds you don't deserve the W. Plain and simple. All fights, headbut or not, should go to the scorecards.
So... - You think the fight should go to the cards after 6 - You then turn around and call the very thing youre advocating for, a bogus way to win - You think the better man would win the fight... - Despite that fury, who won the fight despite the cut, won largely based on what he did after the cut, showing that no... the better man would not have won had it gone to the cards after 6. - Which you pretty much allude to in your next point about there being a pointless rematch that fury wins. ...... Automatically stopping all fights with cuts after the 6th is a horrible idea. Youre robbing a cut fighter his chance to win, despite his condition.
Maybe the only thing could be done is introducing the slow motion in boxing to detect at least those headbutts which provoke severe injuries so as to disqualify the unfair boxer.
I don’t think he’s saying to automatically stop the fight after 6 rounds if there is a cut. I believe he is saying that if the fight is stopped due to a cut (using the same criteria that is currently in place for deciding if it should be stopped), rather than simply awarding a TKO win to the fighter that caused the cut (if by punch), it should always go to the scorecards (assuming that at least 6 rounds have been fought). He’s just saying that it should go to the scorecards just like it would if the cut was caused by an accidental headbutt. I’m not sure what he’s suggesting if the fight hasn’t gone 6 rounds yet...perhaps a No Contest?
If you can't continue from an injury sustained from a punch you lose. There is no going to card. This is no different than having a broken jaw, orbital fracture, broken hand, swollen shut eye. You don't want to get cut, don't get punched.
Not to mention that a whole lot of cuts would suddenly start happening. Doc at the ring side and ref inside the ring is enough to judge the severity of the cut and necessity to intervene, no need for one size fits all type of stuff.
