Things happen way too fast in the ring, for a fighter to be given a KO loss, because in the heat of the moment, the ref mistakenly believes that he's out on his feet. Some ref's are way too quick to jump in and stop a fight just because one guy is covering up, while another flurries away even if he's not standing clean.

It makes no sense, if a guy gets knocked clean on his ass, like, he get's a 10 count t clear his head, but if a guy stays on his feet, he risk getting a TKO loss that he may not deserve. All fights should have standing 8. It would allow a the ref a chance to properly assess whether or not a fighter is truly hurt. If he is, then its a 10-8 just like any other knockdown. If the ref goofed, and he wasn't really hurt, yeah it sucks to lose a point, but its much better than having the fight prematurely waived off. I think standing 8's would be better for the sport as a whole.

I agree there is no harm in doing it that way but it would help a lot.

I agree the standing eight count is very underused by refs nowadays they, some refs like Nady are becoming like the refs in MMA the first time somebody gets hurt they stop the fight, a good example was the Mares-De Leon fight which IMO was a premature stoppage he should have given De Leon a standing eight instead of stopping the fight abruptly.

I've been saying this for years. Look at Rios/Alvarado 1 as another example of a fight that would have been prolonged by a standing 8 count.

I am glad boxing has stepped up it's efforts to keep fighters safe. But it needs to be balanced with giving fighters the opportunity to win.

No, it would do far more harm than good. Referees would give standing 8's anytime a fighter got hit flush, wars like Alvarado-Rios wouldn't even be able to happen because there would be a pause in the action every little while, fighters would be denied the ability to get the stoppage, perhaps multiple times...no.

good idea. I saw one ref do it once when the guy didn't even go down and I liked it. They'll do it in the amateurs, so why not in the pros

I don't see your logic. All i'm saying is that in fights, like RIOS-ALVARADO I, instead of the ref stoppping the fight with Alvarado on his feet, give him a stnding 8 and then make an informed, educated decision as to whether or not he can continue. In the heat of the moment its easy to make the wrong call.

**** a standing 8 count the guy is either up or down, if he wants to take a knee he takes a knee if he wants to stand there and get hit he gets stopped

The referee's prime responsibility is the safety of the 2 fighters. The standing 8 count should be part of the referee's tools in doing that.

Another nonsensical post. You do realize that sometimes, the ref screws up and a guy is covering up and not getting hit all that cleanly, but the ref stops it anyway. A standing 8 would prevent that. Why the hell should a guy have to take a knee if he's not hurt.

A standing 8 would ruin all fights because as soon as someone gets hurt the ref would do a standing 8, why change the rules of something that is not broken?

I have to agree, I don't think premature stoppages are a big enough problem to enforce the rule to all fights... The ref would be looking for a reason to give standing 8's, and would only make things worse.

The problem lies with favoritism, incompetence or even corruption if you ask me.

Over time rules have come and gone, have been changed in details etc. But the main problem has remained the same, and that's the referee wanting one of the fighters to win or not being capable enough to lead the fight.
