A guy should take a knee if he is hurt to prevent an early stoppage or to prevent himself from actually being knocked out. This is what fighters are taught by professional trainers and for good reason. The standing 8 count is not an option for referees to use in most places because it is an amateur rule. It sounds to me like you are saying this rule should be implemented because of bad referees, not for the sake of the fighters.

What I said makes sense. If someone doesn't have one punch knockout power, he could very well lose his advantage due to a standing 8 count. This rule defeats the purpose of your intention. Your main objective is obviously to win. Your second objective or hope is to obtain a knockout. Not hurt your opponent only to have the referee allow him to recover. Are you a fan of headgear too?

I've always said this. I was arguing this point after the Peterson/Matthyse fight.

3 knockdown rule is good. Any fighter that is legitimately knocked down three times is badly hurt and shouldn't take more punishment.

As a side point I always wonder why fighters don't take a knee more often when they are stunned, being pursued with bad intentions and don't have enough legs to move away or plant and fire back. I feel like if you're going to get stopped it shouldn't on the first knock down. My guess would be you don't want to be thinking about whether or not you're being overwhelmed and focus solely on overwhelming your opponent, a positive vs negative thinking type thing.

Couldn't the ref's discretion be trusted to determine how much punishment is too much? What about fights like Moorer-Holyfield 2 or Wlad-Peter?
You've got a legit point though, some guys seem to have the ability to just not 'go out' and they keep getting up no matter how many times they get hurt.

What am I saying... we know the Ref's discretion CAN'T be trusted. Amir Khan should probably have been stopped after the first Prescott KD. He had trouble walking toward the Red AND raising his hands, his eyes looked glassy as ****.

Sometimes a guy works hard to land that one flush punch that hurts his opponent to gain the advantage. You want to take away the advantage he worked for? Bad idea. Why not let guys call time out? It's a fight ffs...

I say give a standing 8 ONLY in situations where you would have stepped in to stop the action, not just because a fighter got rocked.

and I say fire all the british refs

This is a good angle. Perhaps ref's should give a standing 8 before stopping a fight when the hurt fighter has not been knocked down; use those seconds to make a clear decision.

You guys are ignoring the fact that refs talk to the fighters during these times. Sometimes what you guys THINK is a premature stoppage is a graceful way out of the fight so he doesn't end up getting savaged on message boards like this one. An 8 count could easily end up being the most abused vehicle in the sport. Also, to repeat, you deprive the fighter that worked to gain the advantage of that advantage. Better trained refs is the answer.
